Just finished watching the TV show "Divided We Fall: Unity Without Tragedy".

    https://www.dividedwefalltv.org/

I'd recommend it for people to watch. It's about regular people from both sides of the political divide talking to each other with civility and finding common ground. The camera rolling probably kept things more on the civil side.

The show reinforces my opinion that it is much more difficult for people to be hateful to each other when they talk face to face, than anonymously over the internet. Maybe not all hope is lost that the divide between the two sides is too far to bridge.

Sure, when you are talking face to face there is a much higher probability of getting punched in the mouth!

My guess is you don't actually want to watch the show, because it could challenge your misconceptions. AOC is nowhere mentioned in it.

Your attitude shows, however, your "my way is the righteous way" approach and your unwillingness to listen. You would have set a fine example on that show of how to be the one guy who thinks that the other political party is the enemy, rather than made up of regular Americans who, like you, work, have families, kids, and who want to make a better world for themselves and their families.

There is somebody who has to look into the mirror, but it is not me.

I think you are right as far as that goes. Of course, people who are hostile are far less prepared to show it in face to face situations. However, that does little to change what they think and feel, and how they will act later. The same point is being eroded everyday, as the less than civil among are tolerated and apologized to for others causing their anger, making them even less responsible for their own behavior- enabling them to get bolder, and start in with abuse even in speaking to someone they know nothing about. Takes little to trigger such people, because they are looking for a trigger to use. Something like an "all lives matter" shirt. The trash is discarding all remnants of self respect and self-control; becoming more openly and stupidly aggressive everyday.

There's an old saying, "A man convinced against his will is of the same opinion still". It's true- and failing to win a civil debate only breeds resentment in such people, the belief that sane discussions won't get them what they want, and violence is justified.

I don't think you can negotiate this away, any more that you can convince a child throwing a tantrum to be logical. It will take a more direct approach.

I don't think the premise of the show was to convince people from the other side to switch sides, it was to try to view issues through the other side's eyes and to find common ground.

Of course, if you assume that the other side is trash, then you already fail before the starting point of this activity.

I'd really recommend to watch the show, I found it enlightening. Or, you could remain in the RW bubble that feeds you "news" on a daily basis showing the other side as trash, deepening the divisions in the country.

I only assume people are trash when they show me they are trash. However, lipstick doesn't make a pig not a pig, and superficial pretense of being rational does not make trash not be trash.
It's hardly something difficult to identify- people are always telling you who they are.... and trying to convince you that they are something else, along with you being something else. IF you have never reached the point where you know who you are- they will use that to blindside you.

I've passed the point of tolerance for all the excuses for thug behavior, cancel culture, extortion, victimhood, rioters being peaceful, hate being justified- all of it.
Where you are, where I am, where any of us are is primarily the result of how we think and decide our course- or how we abdicate that responsibility and blame it on others for it not being what we want.
The fact that there are obstacles, big, small, occasional or persistent- does not matter. Life IS the challenge of dealing with obstacles and difficulties. If you can't give it your best- you get no respect from me for failing to do so. I will give a hand-up to the man really doing so, but no more hand-outs to the trash using their addiction to victimhood as a philosophy for life.

Not really, the RW of the country is feeling really guilty for some reason. Maybe they haven't divided the country far enough in their minds?

They need to call everyone not a support of tRUMP an enemy. It makes them feel human.

It’s common sense. If two sides seek areas of agreement it’s a discussion. If two sides just joust and defend their positions, it’s a quarrel.

    Pretty much.

In college when we were learning about polling they said that face to face polling is the most unreliable because people tend to tell the pollster what they want to hear in order to avoid conflict. Not always of course but enough to put it at the bottom of reliable polling, right after exit polling.

So yes, people tend to be less hateful face to face but it isn't honesty they are getting.

I'm not sure if that's the better thing.

The best answer is that the democrats and left need to be crushed at the polls.

Which is the basis for the theory making the rounds of the secret Trump voter. I heard one pollster suggest you ask a respondent who they think his neighbor is voting for and he will respond with his true feelings.

I’m a few minutes in and something already blew me away. The fact so many said election of a president was the first time they felt pride being an American. To me that’s so sad. It seems like who’s president should have nothing to do with how one feels about our country.

I shut the video off and thought about the implications of those answers. Basically to me that means they grew up not understanding what this country offers the individual. I guess not everyone had parents and educators who demonstrated the differences between life here and lives lived by 99% of people who’ve ever lived.

Another thought that I may be proved wrong on as I continue watching is that red and blue individuals in the places these interviews took place are not representative of red and blue everywhere. A red from Chicago would seem blue where I live and a blue here would seem red in Chicago. Not on voting record per say, but on the ideas and beliefs level.
