Decentralized planning that removes the traditional hub and spoke city designs responsible for traffic jams at two peak times during the day, coupled to appropriately executed Rail and Air Taxi ports would revolutionize our transportation system as we know it for the better long term. Right now, everybody piles into a City, Monday through Friday, sending commute times through the roof and flooding streets, roads, bridges and highways with traffic. De-cluttered industrial workplaces and de-centralizing their locations provides 360-degrees of logistical opportunity by reversing the hub and spoke layout and changing traffic flows. Clean Rail working from the inside of the perimeter and Light Air Taxis working the outside of the perimeter would (in my opinion) enable much shorter commute times (once mounted) and more point-to-point transit opportunities. This would result in reduced transit times, reduced energy costs and expanding personal time to do other things beyond merely sitting in traffic.

yep, will all be from a app on your phone, we can't maintain the roads as is, so see this as happening as much as flying cars being a mainstream reality

Building new technology that requires the old rundown and in constant need of repair roads is certainly not the future transportation mode we should be planning.

Low flying vehicles would be much more direct point A to point B transportation not having to follow roads.

I want my next car to be a self driving car. The only downside is picking a way to stop on the way to a destination to check something out.

Honestly, I think there are lots of folks who need an autonomous vehicle.

We don't often agree Golem but on this we do.

I imagine that when our society get's into the Star Trek area that this will happen.

Unfortunately we won't be here to see it, well I will but you won't since I will never die.

But I will take a picture of it and go out into the desert and put it on my Golem shrine that I'm going to build because I like you.

I imagine you would just tell the car to stop.

I wouldn't mind letting my work van drive, while I sleep in the back or do paperwork or company training. Would I still be able to count my time on the road as "on the clock"? If my van crashes, who do I sue? Who do I sue if I'm in a rented autonomous vehicle? I still like the option of self control at times, especially in my own vehicle. How would I tow a boat to the lake and launch it? How would I feed cattle in the pasture? There are lots of vehicle uses that aren't always just point A to point B on the road.

Great! Then the car can stop on the interstate while I input directions to stop at the next service area.

Are we trying to relegate humans to not using their arms and legs and minds for anything useful??

Why would it do that and why would you have to input anything?

I talk to my phone all the time, I don't have to stop to input anything.

Say you name your car Suzy, you could just say, "suzy stop to get gas and let's go check out this giant ball of string afterwards".

Then your car would do it.

Right now I can say, "hey Siri, I need gas" and she says ok and gives me directions to the nearest one.

That odd, when I say "I need gas", Alexa sez "there's more frijoles in the fridge"

I would love to have a self driving car for commuting to and from work, or heading to the supermarket.

Will it ever happen? Maybe in certain circumstances like freeway driving, but even then, what happens when your auto driving car causes an accident? Can you point your finger at the manufacturer of the car, or will you be responsible? We'll obviously hold the occupant responsible, even though he had absolutely nothing to do with the operation of the vehicle.

Would you be willing to push that "Automatic driver" button knowing that you will be held legally responsible for any carnage caused?

I don't like the idea of self driving cars. I am not a person who enjoys driving, I go where I have to go and that's all. But, while I'm out on the road, I want humans to drive the other cars. And I sure don't want any robot/computer driving those big diesels.

The biggest problem I see with driverless autos is when they are hacked, either for sport or for profit (coercion)

I imagine drivers feel today about autonomous vehicles the same way that people felt about horseless carriages back in the early 1900's.

They are inevitable, and will be far superior to what we have now.

All the work they are putting into making cars able to operate on existing roads is a novelty, but a waste of time. Once they commit to modifying the roads to facilitate autonomous vehicles, they will become simple, cheap, and common.

Oh. Don't believe that. We're very close. You'll definitely see it. Maybe I will too. It's amazing the stuff new cars can do. I think the majority of cars will be self-driving within 10 to 15 years. I predict initiatives to outlaw human driving should be a hot topic in the 2040 elections.

Not to go too far off topic but what else do you think we are going to see in terms of technology?

I personally can't wait for it all, I think I was born way too early.

Looking at it realistically the glory days for U.S.car makers was the 1920's through the 1960's,the number of American car making brands has shrunk dramatically in my lifetime, and the numbers employed by the industry with them.

I know I don't. I don't trust a computer to discern its surroundings accurately at all times. Trials of self-driving cars have killed people multiple times, due to combinations of A.I./sensor error and human error. I fear that no amount of fine-tuning and adjusting will ever change this. In addition, I enjoy driving and would not want to leave it to a computer or even another human driver.

How about people walk more? :p Also, commuters really should be taking trains and buses and such, not personal cars all the way to work. It may take more than just having good public transportation available to properly incentivize commuters, however.

I cannot fathom anybody who doesn't believe they were born too early. There is so much stuff to come. Much of it very soon. 5G is going to revolutionize the Internet. Specifically the IoT (Internet of things). Things will talk to each other. Like Alexa on steroids. On the topic of cars, your car will know what the car in front of you is going to do before it does it. So you don't need to keep any distance whatsoever. No more wiring to connect to the internet. Everything will be connected to the Internet. Many things already are.... but this will expand. They already have 5G in cities like Houston, NY, LA.... Us in smaller cities will get in 1 to 2 years. I think actual currency will tend to disappear, and will be replaced by blockchain currency (like bitcoin). Not sure how governments are going to keep track of that so... that's going to be a big deal. And Artificial Intelligence.... well. I can't even imagine where that could lead. Sorta evokes some "Terminator" scenarios.
