I personally would not trade my own dad, Robert Tate, not even for my
boyhood idol Evangelist Garner Ted Armstrong, but, it is obvious that I
have been striving all my life to become more well informed than dad was and
I sure try to treat my wife better than he treated mom.

Dad deserves a lot of credit though for being a massive improvement over his
own father.......... who was really messed up.

I really like the family and friends that I grew up with. I would not trade them but
.... I have to admit that some of the things that I heard about my grandfather George Tate
..... well....... if I could somehow apologize to my grandmother, Nellie (MacDonald) Tate.... then
it would be nice to be able to do that..........

I feel that I learned a lot about certain ways of thinking that I want to try my best to avoid in
this life from both dad as well as his father. Perhaps my grandmother Nellie Tate would be
somewhat more forgiving toward her husband to know that his rather bad example has resulted
in some of their grandchildren learning important lessons from both of them.........

I think it is normal as a Canadian to be ashamed of how my ancestors behaved toward
other races and other ethnic groups. We can certainly be ashamed of how the M. S. St. Louis was
turned away from Halifax, Nova Scotia after being turned away from Miami and previously from Cuba.

I think it is kind of normal to wish to apologize, at least in some way, for these events of the past.

    Dennis,
Take a look at us now, after the passage of the Federal Reserve Banking Act of 19 and 14, which was a complete betrayal of the founding principles and sentiments of these United States of [North] America.

I am Quebecois, with a sizeable native ancestry. Canada existed since the early 1600s, under the French regime, and that Canada fell in 1763 with the Paris Treaty.

Thus, I feel no obligation or regret whatsoever towards American patriots who fought their war of independance mere years after the Conquest (as we still call it).

However, if my ancestrors knew what would happen afterwards - the Metis crisis and Louis Riel - we might have fought for the Yanks in 1812, and with our (considerable) efforts, maybe we could have got them victory as well.

The Canadians at that time might wish they had a second chance to do it right but I'm not a believer in the sons being responsible for the sins of their fathers. You don't owe us a thing. You've been a good neighbor and you have my thanks.

    YES!
    Most definitely and indisputably, YES!

One might at least expect the Frenchies there to have supported any war against the Brits.

Not when the RC religion was given protection. That freaked out the Patriots, particularly in New England.

I appreciate your penitence Dennis. Now I want some compensation!! (just kidding) My greatX5 grandfather was General John Stark. He was the hero of Bennington, was also in the French and Indian War, and served at Bunker Hill. He refused to submit to the Continental Army but operated as a volunteer. Though George Washington respected him and desired his service, he would pass him over for promotion because Stark was of Scottish heritage. Stark coined the phrase "Live Free or Die".

I still don't think you owe us an apology for anything your ancestors. I will never apologize for anything my ancestors might have done in the past because I did not do it. I never owned slaves and I never killed any Indians or stole any land.

I have long since forgiven you Canadians your transgressions. However if you are feeling guilt, some reparations might help us both out. The address is 234 Alm Ave, Lebanon, Oregon and you should make the Check payable to Btthegreat R. Smith.

I do not defend those who did, it was just the sign of the times. I do not believe we have any responsibility for their actions. If there are any people living now who have been slaves in America then maybe America owes them something. Or if there are any living people who owned slaves then they might owe something but the rest of us owe no one for slavery.

Arnold led a failed attack on (French regime) Canada before he committed what he is now known for in the US.
