Do you believe that a sitting president is above the law?

Do you believe that a president, or his close personal aids / staff be immune from all forms of prosecution?

I personally do not think anyone isw above the law, but I have heard on these forums from many people htat they believe a president is, or should be, above the law. For example, I have read many times from Republicans that a president should be allowed to lie to congress for any reason. Which I think is a load of BS. But some people do actually believe this. Im curious what the rest of you think.

Gotta love polls with choices like this.

Where is the option for "I hate both parties equally and nobody is above the law?"

Republican/Democrat describe political parties. republican/democrat describe adherents to a style of government.

In the US, if you support representative governance limited by a constitution, you are by definition a republican, though certainly not necessarily a Republican. Similarly, if you support representative governance with no limits, you are a democrat, though certainly not necessarily a Democrat.

As an example as it relates to the OP, a totalitarian president (who is above the law or is able to make the law) is not an option for those of the republican bent, though it certainly seems to be an option for some Republicans... anything is possible within a true democracy, including voting to abolish democracy and installing authoritarianism.

Nah - that's way too narrow a definition. Socialists may support bat-**** out of control government, but it's not part of the democrat platform.

I tend Libertarianism / classic Liberal. Both teams today want to limit my freedoms, they just disagree about which of my freedoms I shouldn't enjoy.

Neither party supports the most liberty for the most people. Both teams are in lock-step wrt things like my right to privacy. They are ALL against it.

President Lincoln thought he was above the law, the Constitution and Natural Law.

I suppose a sitting President can lie his butt off or tell little lies if it's in the national interest of the United States.

    Is lying a crime ?

Every president going back to Jefferson has violated the constitution in some way.

Lies aren't necessarily a crime. It depends on context more then anything else.

What trump did with trying to do a deal with Russia WHILE campaigning for the nomination while denying any connection at all to russia on the campaign trail is if not illegal sure as hell is unethical and sleazy.

Seems the standards for ethics of a president have been permanently trashed by Trump and his trumpettes. What a bigly win for America.

No, I don't believe a sitting President should be above the law. Richard Nixon or Bill Clinton didn't receive any special protection. Neither should any other President.

Is there anything which we should infer from this premise?
you seem to be implying that no president can be held acountable since all have offended in some way?

don't need to. He's way, way ahead of the publicly available evidence so far disclosed. Perhaps you've been following the various events and revelations?

Clearly, the Clinton presidency showed us that yes, at least he thought he was. Clearly, the Obama presidency showed us the same. Does the trend indicate that all future presidents then should consider themselves in this light?

I have followed the news yes, but so far nothing has appeared that directly linked Trump to anything approaching an illegal act with the Russians. If Mueller can prove he did then send Trump packing. But I am going to assume he is innocent until proven guilty. So far all I have really seen is that Trump has hired a bunch of scummy people which is bad but not him making deals with foreign powers to help getting elected. You on the other hand are assuming the worst due to preconceived biases with no care that there is no evidence or even charges. You want him to be guilty so there for in your mind he is guilty. Which is just as wrong if not more so in a just society.

Some can't grasp the concept. It's like we're talking a foreign language! If you aren't on "my" team you are obviously on "their" team.

No. I can hate both at the same time. :)

    Cheers.
