I have. You think ahead, damn, next year my boy will be potty trained and I'll save $X/month on diapers. Next year I can put my kid in public school and not pay for daycare. In two years I can get out of the military and move back home. In 4 years I will be out of graduate school and can get a real job. In another year I can afford a downpayment on a house.

And you get there, and damn, you realize those were the best years in life, while still looking forward to retirement and missing the joys of the present.

I hadn't heard of this idea until my early 30's. I was in the locker room at work, end of shift, a couple guys in their 20's were complaining about their jobs, wishing they were doing something else. An older guy, in his 50's, turned to one of them and said "son, you're doing nothing but wishing your life away".

Wow... you never know when or where life changing wisdom will come.

It's a pretty profound statement. Life goes by way too fast. We find ourselves all over the place in our thoughts and emotions, rather than living in the moment and having gratitude.

But if they were in full-time dead-end jobs I guess it could be argued that the older (and wiser?) guy was absolutely right. Although having said that, there are those who have zero aspirations to better themselves even if they are able to, but don't have the initiative to make the necessary moves.

Good point, the older guy may have meant that they were wishing their lives away because they were doing nothing but making wishes.

For me the sentiment was never about a dead end job. It was just wishing another year would go by so something good would happen to better my situation. A car would be paid off, or a student loan. I regret having those thoughts while a baby was sitting in my lap trying to get my attention.

Oh I was only making an exception for the sake of argument; I'm with you all the way because I've been there myself, and more times than I care to contemplate.

So it's not a problem after you are dead. Correct. ;)

aw.. it's perfectly normal when they are so little to want to fast forward a bit. My kids are now 12 and 14 and believe me it's so much easier...

Listened to too many people for too many years showing up for work on Monday wishing it was Friday already.

Although my last six months of work before retiring seemed like forever!

But I'll bet there are times when you wish you could go back and watch them grow up again. Just think, they will be easier still when they go off to college or move out & get married. Then you will miss them. :)

14 year olds are yucky. I was on the bus the other day and behind me sat a pack of 14 year olds, talking in the annoying way that they talk the whole darn trip. I hoped they get off soon, but no! I am not a parent, so I - obviously - would not know, but I definitely prefer 5-10 year olds over 0-3 (useless) and 12-18 (trash of the universe) year olds. :p

Only in the eyes of a mother. To everyone else, every teenager is always obnoxious. :D

Maybe I only like "5-10 year olds" because of "family blindness" too since I have a cousin that age. :p

Whenever I come across one, I box his ears! (what a quaint 1950's expression? lol)

We have a two-year-old grand son. He is a bottomless pit. So you buy him a box of fries and a drink, but you can't take him through the produce section of the super market. He doesn't want fries, he wants raw broccoli.

Children are just reflections of their parents and their skills, or lack thereof, at raising children.

Having had a workaholic for a a father who was NEVER around I chose instead to be involved in the raising of my child. It was an exceptionally rewarding experience and don't regret a single minute of the time I spent with her.

As far as wishing one's life away goes that disappeared as soon as I achieved job satisfaction via my accomplishments. I can honestly say that I have spent the majority of my life doing what I liked and would not have traded it for anything else even when things did not always work out the way I wanted.

Yes, I am anticipating certain future events that will improve our quality of life but if they don't come to pass I will simply find alternatives ways to achieve more or less the same ends.

I enjoy my life and have no interest in "wishing" any of it away.

In my experience, most co-workers looked forward to retirement. I did. Then I got there. Suddenly my perspective changed. All my life I had been looking forward to the next advantage, the next opportunity, the next house, the next vacation. Now, in my retirement dream house, if I look forward it's to the prospect of growing old and feeble, and death. And suddenly, time is passing much too fast.

Stop giving him fries and a drink. He knows real nutrition when he sees it.
