If so, how do you resolve them? Do you avoid some topics? My own story will follow soon.

Ya. My old man advocates for the death of liberals and even liberal fetuses. I am not a liberal yet find his overt hostility off putting. We did not speak for a while but in the end I told him that I will no longer discuss politics with him and will keep him at arms length. Lost a lot of respect for him as he said things I never though I would hear coming out of the old man’s mouth. I have seen him since and we had a pleasant visit.

    Thank you for sharing.

I am grateful to my parents for supporting me. In the past I did not appreciate it, but now I understand that they are true heroes.

As for political differences. My mother is very offended by my views on gender issues. Thus, I do not talk about these issues at home since 2004. My parents know my views, but not talking about controversial subjects is part of etiquette.

Another advantage of being an old fart. There aren't that many family members left that we will even talk to and that's not necessarily because of political issues. :)

A real problem for me is loneliness. Thus, I am trying to make Discord friends.

My stepbrother and his wife, both liberal West coast educated lawyers. Have not seen them in several years, just as well, if we get into politics, it would only cause anger.

I am grateful to my parents for all they provide for me. Over 90% of American parents abandon adult children with Disability.

    But

    1) Discussing some political issues
    2) Me drinking alcohol

are absolutely prohibited. The second is under my doctor's orders.

No, even though we have a couple of family members deep in the thrall of Wokeness, who tend to take liberties with civility. However we try to remember that they're really just outsized toddlers, so it would be foolish to take their tantrums personally. Generally though, we don't engage in 'falling out' or other dysfunctional intra-family behaviours. Life is far too short, and family far too precious.

The doctor prescribing me Effexor mentioned that

    1) Alcohol has bad side effects with Effexor
    2) Being an Aspie, I am likely to fall into an addiction

Yep. Don’t discuss politics. My brother is very stubborn and I can’t make him understand that he’s wrong.

Do you have irreconcilable political differences with your family members?

If you support trump you have no place in my life. No irreconcilable differences at all.

So you would disown family for their opinions? Did you ever think if politics motivates such extremes, you might just be taking politics to seriously? You sound, so very tolerant...

Fortunately my parents are tolerant of my opinions. But they do not want me to talk about them in their presence.

Many Americans abandon their family members over politics.

As politics is about values, it would make sense that people would not get on if their values are different. It would depend on what the differences are and how much they effect general living. That is I do not think it is politics per se which would make family members fall out but that that difference may represent a big difference in values.

Not me. Politics frequently changes in a year or two at most. Family is for the rest of your life.

Understand the Effexor thing of course, but I would argue that AS doesn't strongly predispose you to addictions. In fact I saw a paper once (can't remember when or where, sorry) which indicated that people on the spectrum are slightly more likely to be life teetotallers. Makes sense, since fear of loss or limited control can be a feature.

No. Absolute not. Our values are what they are when we're celebrating a special occassion together, or having fun together, or enjoying good food together. Our politics have nothing to do with the essential person. I know some incredibly kind conservatives, and some absolute baastard liberals. And more importantly, vice versa. Our essential goodness and self is not determined by who we vote for. Thinking it is makes YOU the asshat and 'difficult' relative.

Interesting that you think political leanings have nothing to do with the essential person. I’d have thought that the essential person directs your politics. E.g. generous, kind hearted Christians become Republicans.( haha)

I would like to think that "generous, kind hearted Christians" do become Republicans.

But I will freely acknowledge a lot of greedy, materialistic people also become Republicans.

And that some "generous, kind hearted Christians" do become Democrats.
