Does going to college really make you smarter? When I went I found it was rather easy to pass and get a degree and I am by no means a very smart person. There is debate that colleges have dumbed down their curriculum just to get higher graduation rates. That might explain why just about anyone with half a brain can get a degree anymore. A study shows only 30% of Americans even feel going to college is necessary.

I would also like to point out in Ames, Iowa university students several years decided to riot for a week for no apparent reason at all. You would think with a higher education they would be smart enough to know this is stupid and Ames is a liberal town so most of them were probably liberals since liberals seem to like to riot. Yet they are so much smarter then us Republicans or so they say.

So just because a study shows liberals have higher educations means nothing. I know plenty of smart people that have no degrees at all and I know many Republicans that have degrees or go to college. Iowa for example has 15 community colleges and most of them are in Republican counties.

"Iowa is also one of the smartest states in the nation with its students consistently outperforming their counterparts on national standardized tests."

    http://www.iadg.com/iowa-advantages/workforceeducation/

Iowa voted for Trump and has many smart people. That's a little off topic but the left wants to try and say they are better than us for having more educated people but I don't think a degree really means anything anymore. How does it make you a smarter person? You can be a complete idiot and still have a degree.

It's a complexe subject, but yes globally education isn't smartness.

Anyway, it's a disastrous idea to use your diplome as a reason to scorn people.

But really what a tertiary education - a GOOD one does. Is to teach critical thinking skills

Yes, a good education absolutely teaches critical thinking skills and that is rare.

It teaches how to look at facts dispassionately - how to find evidence and sift it for truth and it teaches how to apply that to a question

Now although not all right wingers are denialists and or unable to critically think nearly every climate science denialist I have debated is right wing.

Sadly most do not know the difference between a facebook post and a research paper.

I can't help but highlight "Is liberals really smarter?" as it is very much part of the context of this thread, so I apologize in advance:)

As for your points, I agree that degrees have become easier to pass with respect to my country which I presume is similar to the US. Too many college leavers are encouraged to go onto university and many of the courses have no end product in career prospects. University lectures have also changed - they are now run in the same way as college education was run. Universities used to encourage personal thought and development of ideas which is no longer the case. Lecturers now are just teaching/dictating on a subject

The reality of the world we live in is that you need college in order to have a shot at a decent job. It's become such that a two year degree is equal to what a high school diploma was 20 years ago. Unfortunately even a four year degree doesn't guarantee a good job with the way the market is. And then there's cost. College is enormously expensive and grants have become almost nonexistent.

Does a college degree make one smarter? As mentioned, in terms of learning critical thinking and how to do research it certainly does. It also exposes one to a much wider circle of thinking.

That said, many people are not suited for college . I've known many people who simply could not deal with books but were great with their hands. Some got training in trades and did well. Others had their talents wasted because they couldn't get that training.Very few of them were "dumb".

In my opinion we need to "value" all forms of labor more and make training in the trades more available

Lol...It is embarrassing to see the rampant illiteracy from those who want to denigrate education.
There certainly is a strong connection between the poorly educated and trump supporters.

    Very true.

And, of course, numerous studies have concluded that the more highly educated a person is, the more likely they are to have Liberal political views.

I was able to attend college for a year and a half before I was forced to relocate and couldn't continue. While I was there I maintained a 3.8 grade point average and never had to open a book. All I had to do was attend the lectures and pay attention. I was even taking college algebra and writing line of code in C++ without ever opening a book. This is where I think our universities are failing. They are making too easy to get the diploma thereby giving our kids too much free time on their hands for protests and riots.

You're either very smart or you went to Liberty University.

Either way your post has little bearing on the majority of the nation

A college degree can be important for higher tier corporate positions, and for a persons who plan to advance in certain fields, such as Veterinarians, engineers, nursing etc. A college degree can help you be more competitive in the market place.

But a smart hard working and ambitious person can do well without a degree. I know several people who never went to college but by making good life and professional decisions have acquired the skills necessary for job and financial security. They do well.

The ideology often pushed on students by clueless professors who have been in acadamia all their professional lives, can set grads back when they hit the real world...

And college can set a student back if their extracurricular activities included raucous protests or activism away from the mainstream. Employers are often very interested in what activities a student spent time on while in college. Attending protest after protest doesn't gain a person kudos from most businesses. Students need to plan for their goals like anyone else and aren't immuned from bad decisions.

    To the OPs question?

In general prior to the 1980s give or take it probably did because many that went to college were already in the elite in terms of ability and drive. And higher education institutions did not see themselves as "the customer (students) is always right" businesses whose job it was to farm out as many degrees as possible.

Also back then and before, the highly paid professors actually TAUGHT students rather than spending their time on research and having their classes taught by graduate assistants and much lesser professors.

If we first throw the nonsense of political evaluations like liberal, left, right, up, down, etc. into the dustbin and deal with facts and logic ...

Intelligence is something fundamentally natural. These famous intelligence tests in small children prove this simply and simply. There are cunning and less cunning people and that is just so ... no matter why.

However, good school is important and forms together with the parents and the so-called social framework the education of a person. For this reason, someone with a university degree is far away from being automatically smarter than someone without such a degree.
Sure, with a master in mathematics, someone can "calculate the X from the Y", which someone without such a master rather can not, but conversely I know already some academics in their specialty are certainly total experts, but in many things of life are simply incapable! In other words, there is an academician who can calculate the size of his lawn on the square millimeter and how high the average blade of grass is in moment etc. ... but he can not mow the lawn because too stupid to use the lawn mower!
Conversely, there are also people who are not the brightest heads on this planet because of lack of good school education and other circumstances.
I can remember a BBQ in Georgia, when a young woman spoke to me about how it is in Germany, if one lives constantly in the war. What ...? What war? Answer: Her father-in-law fought against the Nazis in Europe, her father was in the 1970s 1 year in the war in Germany and her cousin is currently in a war mission in Ramstein Air Base!
Well ... I "educated" the woman then in the further discussion a little bit and closed an "education gap" about my country!

    Anyway ...
Of course I am aware of what you want with your post and thread and what you are about:
Supposedly, only uneducated dumbasses have elected Donald Trump for President, because educated did not. This assertion, which I know too, is, of course, nonsense.
I could simply say that there are idiots who have chosen Trump in every educational level, but that would be too simple and incorrect ... apart from the fact that Trump is an idiot in politics and being the President.
The fact is that lack of education together with a lack of interest for things, makes people more vulnerable to be fooled by smart acting people ... basically and also without Trump valid!

Of course it makes you smarter simply for all the crap you have to study.

It also taught me the difference between being smart and having intelligence.
