You're probably patriotic. If you weren't, you wouldn't care who was president. I just think your patriotism is misplaced because you think you can only be patriotic if the president you prefer is elected. Caring about national issues and the direction the country takes is patriotic. Look, as Americans, the thought that some invading army could sweep into the country and conquer us is simply not a part of our national consciousness. But just for the sake of discussion, let's say some other power had destroyed our defenses and started doing it. Don't know about you, but I'd pick up a rifle, and the end of my days would be spent fighting back best I could.
As a retired military member and American Indian that has been in 39 other countries around the world. Hell yes patriotism exists. There is a reason that no country will invade the US, patriots like myself that believe in this country and protecting my family and country from all threats foreign and domestic. If SHTF then I would get my family out to our hunting property and then if necessary I would join any militia looking to take down the foreign invader. As I have stated, I am more than competent shot at 1000 yards, and I would use that skill to the advantage that I was taught in the military.
Thank you for sharing. I am Jewish. I came to USA from USSR. As I Jew, my saying is that I was never Russian, and will never become American.
For some nations, the identity of nation, ethnicity and religion are the same. Like ethnically Jewish, religiously Jewish, and Israeli. Like ethnically Russian, East Orthodox Christian, Russian citizen. Like ethnically Persian, Shiite Muslim, Iranian citizen.
The problem is patriotism means different things to different people. To some it means waving a flag. To others it means joining the military or other public service. Still others it means attacking people who they think are dangerous to the country. For me it means defending the constitutional rights of ALL Americans and supporting our friends and allies. So I support individuals and groups who help do this. One thing I know for sure is that anyone who calls him/herself a patriot isn't one. Patriots do not seek glory or self aggrandizement.
Well that is certainly one view. Keeping your EGA anchors inboard and the wingtips parallel is superficial to some as well, but to others it might mean something different.
Many people like the fact that USA is for everyone. But that makes USA into a global international entity.
Yes American Patriotism most certainly exists (and if I say that then it definitely does because I'm an Atheist, Pro-Science Progressive). You and most people though forget a major reality of America (or simply don't actively consider it). America is a truly giant country. Russia in terms of population distribution is a very small country, almost all its population is located near Moscow. It's easy then for Russians to sit and say "Ah, America is divided". No, America is simply much more spread out in terms of population than Russia, hence it can seem "disorganized" to someone looking in. Jewish people are fine but are not really in control of any one place. Israel exists at the pleasure of the US. If the US stopped support Israel would collapse overnight. So another bad comparison. Americans are simply an empire with many immigrants. We do have great patriotism though, but it is divided among our various races, religions and classes. But it is very much there, just much more intricate than most countries, considering we are an empire that doesn't like to call itself one, but we still very much are. Rome was much the same way. Outsiders looking in decreed Rome to be chaos. Romans chuckled and knew better.
I detest hyphenated-Americanism. I could care less where my recent ancestors came from. All I know is, they most likely left Europe, because it sucked. I owe no allegiance to any place they came from. That being said, patriotism is the last refuge of the scoundrel, and the most whored out word in the English language. When government starts cranking out the Patriotic propaganda, you might as well lube up, and bend over, because you're going to get screwed some how. Lastly, to say there's no such thing as patriotism by individual citizens in this country, only goes to show you really don't know much about America.
It would seem American patriotism has taken the form of fighting against attacks on the Constitution that is represented by it. This often means speaking out against the attacker and has become a primary reason Trump is disliked.
But that is not Nationalism. Although I do agree that US Constitution represents some of the best ideals.
I am a Jew and US Citizen. One of my sayings is that I was never a Russian and will never become an American.
I am grateful to USA for supporting Israel. As Numbers 24:9 mention, that is a great virtue. Israel existed as the Jewish Nation for 33 centuries, but only recently returned to being a Nation.
