I've often wondered about this. The fact that it wasn't them who ended slavery, but the Republicans. That's got to make them feel a bit of guilt, no?

The Republican Party still can’t come to terms with courting and securing that demographic.

Unfortunately, it doesn’t have the cajones to toss that constituency aside because it doesn’t believe it can be relevant without it. A sad state of affairs.

And I wonder, how much longer the Republican Party can last while holding onto 19th-century beliefs in the 21st century? You would think that xenophobia, racism, and being anti-democratic would be shameful traits to display, but no, they wear those traits on their sleeves.

How exactly are they xenophobic, racist and against democracy?

What do you mean they can’t come to terms with it?

Nope they don't. Because they have revised history in their minds to where there was some great shift where all the racists on their side of the time went over to the Republican side of the aisle. Because of this they do not acknowledge their racist past. And afaik have never apologized for it.

Well even if all of the racists DID go over to the Republican side of the aisle, this would not be a reason to not acknowledge their racist past.

I agree. But they refuse to. They do talk about the history of racism. But they conveniently leave out parts and depict that everyone during the slavery era as being racist. Its called whitewashing history. Gotta make themselves look good after all.

In the US? Nope. Several of the Founding Fathers (not all) actually wanted to abolish slavery from the get go. The only reason that they didn't was because they knew that they wouldn't be able to get support for such from all 13 colonies and they needed those colonies that supported slavery for mutual protection or the fledgling US surely would have been defeated in time.

Its definitely not a proud moment in history for their party, which is probably why you hardly see any of them try to rationalize the confederacy as being on the right side of history, or accept their flag as a symbol of their pride

I have very little doubt southern conservatives who made up the Dem party back then feel any guilt. Mainly because they are all dead.

Does the Democratic Party still feel the guilt of their slavery supporting past?

This title is the perfect example of internet trolling.

Yes, but you're assuming that the confederate flag indicates racism.

So how long have you supported tearing down confederate statues?
