It sort of happened like that. They needed to prep Bush for his own presidency (among other things) so it was vital he got the VP. As for the media being the threat well we don't know how exactly they did it since it was secretive but it's definitely possible that was one of their methods. The only mistake is that thinking Big Media were behind it, even today they don't have that kind of power. What they did with Bush was the same thing Hearst did when he owned all the major papers. He simply used them to fuel the fire so we would go to war with the Spanish and it worked brilliantly.

I think the big media smear as you call it or the negative coverage of Trump was brought on by Trump himself. It has more to do with his obnoxious, rude, uncouth personality, his childish antics like name calling and throwing of temper tantrums like a spoiled 4-year-old brat along with his 3rd grade schoolyard bullying tactics. Trump very unpresidential behavior and actions brought all the negative coverage down on him. It seems the big media and most Americans expected their president to act presidential, not like some wrestler in the WWE in a pre-fight interview. It isn’t, wasn’t only big media but Americans as a whole. Trump’s personality and behavior made it very easy to dislike him. It wasn’t Trump’s policies that turned folks off as much as it was the man himself. His persona which was fit for a reality TV show, but not the Oval Office. They expected their president to behave like an adult, like a grownup, to provide the office of the presidency the dignity it deserves. Trump failed in these. I believe had Trump had the personality of a Reagan, a Bill Clinton or even an Obama, he would have been reelected. The dislike of most Americans and the smears as you put it are a direct result of Trump himself. His very distasteful personality, this personal political vendettas against mostly his fellow republicans, not democrats. His thirst for revenge, throw in his childish antics, his schoolyard bully tactics, you have someone very easy to dislike, someone to present negatively to the American public. The two impeachments happened, 1-6 happened, the classified documents at Mar-a-Lago happened resulting in the appointment of 2 special counsels, the indictments in Manhattan happened, the trial of E. Jean Carrol happened, more to come from Georgia and elsewhere. All happened. Reporting on these isn’t a smear, they’re a result of Trump’s own personal actions.

I would say the short answer is the American people weren’t ready for someone like Trump with his uncouth, rude personality along with his very unpresidential behavior to become president. All previous presidents had a certain decorum about them. A standard of behavior that Trump threw out the window. Trump could have met those behavior standards, acted more like folks think a president should, ceased with the name calling and bullying tactics, avoided his vengeful political attracks and more. He may have been much more successful in dismantling or attacking the deep state if he did. He could have appointed the appropriate agency and department heads, made them follow his guidelines, change the policies and the rules of the different departments and agencies, which usually go unnoticed. He could have done this with a smile on his face, walking around and looking presidential. He could of like Reagan did most of the time, let the personal attacks roll off his back without a response. No response caused for the most part those personal attacks to cease as they didn’t get the expected response. When Reagan thought the attacks were getting too personal, he’d tell a self-depreciating joke which left the attackers dumbfounded if not shell shocked, their ammo pouch empty. Trump’s way failed in all aspects to dismantle the deep state. His way was all rhetoric for public consumption, his very loyal base consumption, with its name calling and everything else. Trump failed to change the direction of this country one bit. Reagan did and Reagan did it quietly, mostly behind the scene, with a smile on his face behaving very presidential without the political vindictiveness for his political enemies. Reagan had no huge ego to sooth, Trump did and still has. The United States changed under Reagan to a path that would be followed up to Obama. Trump’s presidency didn’t change a thing, we’re still on the Obama path. Trump in my opinion was all hot air, hot air for his base’s consumption. Reagan left a conservative legacy, a government more on the conservative path. Trump, his legacy will be one of an egotistical blowhard that failed miserably to change the liberal path Obama instituted.
I totally agree with you that President Ronald Reagan did a phenomenal job...... but..... now in 2023 we seem to be left with only one presidential candidate who has the courage to finish what has been began back in 2017 when he took office. We might even get a surprise.... and he might even take some of your advice for this time around...... perhaps he had some sort of reason for the way he did things for his first four years.....on one level... he may have wanted to be mis-underestimated?!

There’s nothing there for him to finish. To finish something, one first must start something. Trump was all talk, letting things go the way they always had. Trump is the master showman. He has let the impression on those who want to believe in him that he did accomplish a lot, started a lot when all he did was talk and talk some more. Mostly on Twitter where no one could ask him questions about what he said and what was actually done or accomplished when nothing was. One must remember that the 7-time party switcher adopted the political philosophy, ideology of whatever party he belonged to at the time. Trump has no political ideology of his own. Yet in our two-party system, our two major parties have a monopoly on it that other modern democracies don’t have. No viable third or fourth choice. Given a viable third choice, an even playing field, I’m certain that third choice would have won in 2016 and in 2024 given that most Americans don’t want Trump nor Biden in 2024. We don’t have that. So, one is forced to choose between two bottom of the barrel dregs that only their avid supporters want which is only a quarter to a third of the country. The 2024 winner will be the candidate the voters least want to lose. Not win, no, not win, but least want to lose when in fact most Americans want both Trump and Biden to lose. The monopoly of the two major parties prevents both from losing when that is what most Americans really want.

I never belonged or joined either major political party. Although I did belong to Ross Perot’s Reform Party for a while. I like being a swing voter able to decide where I stand on the issues or who to vote for without being dictated to by the party leaders and following them like mindless robots. The problem today is both major parties have become full of ideologues where a pragmatist like me that look for common sense and practicable solutions to our problems isn’t welcomed. For the ideologues from both parties, finding a solution to our hottest and most pressing issues is unwanted. Those issues have become much more valuable as campaign issues to fire up the party’s base than to be solved. Once solved those issues would go away. That’s the last thing both major parties want.
