Ya just have to admire the old guy - with all he has to put up with he still keeps his sense of humour.
He obviously loves life, even if it has such a quality as he endures moment to moment. So his life has meaning for himself, even if he thinks in the grand scheme it can have no meaning. And is just an accident of nature, purposeless. And yet he probably experiences some purpose.
