East vs West. Who is stronger - the SCO or NATO?

It is important to couch this convo in the context that actual direct war (where both sides are attacking each others homeland) between NATO/US and Russia/China on simply a conventional basis will not happen. If there was a serious military threat to either side - nukes would be used.

It is then nonsensical to count up conventional forces and make any conclusions just on that basis. Leaving nukes out of the equation - what is also misguided is talking about today's military forces in WW2 terms where we count up ships and planes.

While this may have slightly more relevance today than it will tomorrow - the conventional calculation is changing dramatically. Missile technology has advanced at rapid pace - at a pace faster than the ability to defend. When we count ships and planes - it is no longer realistic to compare numbers on one side to the other when one or more missiles can take out these planes and ships in a way that is far more lethal than in the past.

AI and drones are further changing the power equation.

What we see is Russia China (and India for that matter) working together on military projects. In particular - military projects involving missile technology. This both logical and dangerous because for the cost of a 15 Billion dollar aircraft carrier you can build a whole lot of supersonic smart and stealthy cruise missiles.

Ships are quickly becoming obsolete in the face of modern missile technology - even if a battle group could knock out a few of these missiles - and this is not easy by any stretch - there is no way to reliably respond to salvo's of these missiles. The defenses can be overwhelmed.

The latest innovation is hyper-sonic missiles and there is simply no good defense against these. India tested a hypersonic missile (a collaboration with Russia) late last year.
