Sounds unlikely eh? I mean up until a few years ago getting the Average Aussie interested enough in ANYTHING political would have been harder than getting men to understand women :p. It does explain some of the rise of the more toxic type of nationalism

This report from the ABC is very thought provoking

At least FB has finally done the right thing and deleted those groups. After what's happened in Christchurch today I'm becoming unapologeticaly intolerant of the extreme RW hatred and bigotry that those groups represented

    Amen!

I am betting that the crazies who shot up the Mosques were egged on by FB pseudo groups

I think we can all agree that those calling for and executing violence need to be imprisoned.

The remainder have the right to free speech, and scapegoating them is every bit as detestable as scapegoating Muslims after Islamic terror attacks.

This seems to be the only thread touching on the topic in this forum, which is it in? Link perhaps?

Hi Steady Pie. I see Bowerbirds already given you the link but I just wanted to say that while I dont agree with many of your posts, I 110% agreed what you said in the thread about Christchurch

Thanks, VC. It's in times like these that we forget our petty differences and come together. This is why propaganda of the deed is such a pointless endeavour. They don't see that while it can create panic and scapegoating and divide us, it also has the potential to make us realise, through how extremely out of the realm of acceptable conduct they are, how close we are - left, right, feminist, egalitarian, pro-life, pro-choice, whatever.

Standing behind it all is the desire to do good. Pro-choicers don't have that view because they want to maliciously kill children anymore than pro-lifers have that view because they hate women. They are all aiming at the good as best as they can see it. The vast majority of us (upwards of 95%) just want what is best. We tend to disagree over what this constitutes, but we can come to an agreeable compromise through deliberation and calm debate with the aid of free speech and respect for each other.

Looking back on that tragedy in Parkland, Florida - it made me realise that when any ideology, left, right, whatever, goes radically to the extremes, they converge around support of violence, and us peaceful people come together in unanimous opposition.

At times like these I think we all need to drop our petty disagreements for a moment and appreciate how lucky we are to live in a world where the vast majority just want what's best, and to have faith that no matter what, we'll work it out together.

Please resist the temptation to scapegoat innocents.

This is a tough time for all of us but we cannot let them win.

    Yeap,
we are all humans and as such humanism should always come first.
Any religion, political persuasion, nationlism, patriotism and so on should always come last.
May these souls rip. Another sad day for this world....

I'd put him down as a general nutter. Clearly this wasn't about the environment so his views on that are not relevant. He is, however, a murdering bastard.

Sorry. I was pretty angry last night. I should have made it clear that my intolerance is for the Fraser Annings of this world and even more extreme than him types, not your garden variety person who regurgitates bigoted tropes but who are horrified when something like this happens.

I saw in today's local news that people have been leaving flowers at the NZ High Commission and at mosques round the city and giving support to local Muslims. Displays of the good in people is the exact opposite of yesterday and not a reaction the terrorist would enjoy seeing.

Hes a white nationalist, and the extreme RW ideology was peppered throughout his manifesto. He identified himself as a white European, with European not Australian what he said his nationality was. They're also looking into what if any ties he had to online neo-Nazi groups. Not going to be surprised to see links discovered.

I agreed originally that his manifesto should be removed, but now I think it should be available so people can see what he is and how confused his ranting is.

Hi, everyone is highly strung in an environment such as this. We have to give people space to grieve in their own way.

I disagree that he would have been disturbed by the reaction of mourners, indeed he said that he expected exactly that.

He is not ill, he knows that the vast, vast, overwhelming majority of whites vehemently disagree with him. He knew that there would be reeds and crying mourners.

His strategy is not the 49 dead, it is our response to this evil, horrible act. Arden's actions. Morrison's actions.

    Have you read the manifesto?

the real issue is 'labeling'... as a world society we will never go forward until we stop the labeling of rw, lw, extremist, et al...

we should be condeming the person for what they are, psychopaths, not for whichever doctrine they align themselves with.

i consider myself a 'center leaning conservative', but in reality i take 'bits n pieces' from all points of view, and i'm convinced most people do the same, but as humans we like to have a sense of belonging, so we choose to identify ourselves with a group dynamic... our leaders, on the other hand, see fit to keep the division for without it they fear losing their jobs, sadly that is all it is to them now, just a job with huge benefits... iow, pure greed & power drives them...

every doctrine has its extremists, whether rw, lw, centrist, conservative, liberal, progressive, religious, non religious, yet the truth is that we all share many pieces of each, but for some reason we feel an overwhelming need to belong to just one while condemming the others... it is time to set all of that aside, stop placing bad people in those groups, rather place them in their own catagory, psychotics, while not including them in a political or religious group...

I've read bits and pieces that have been in articles, but not the entire thing. Is it still available online? If you have a link, I wouldn't mind having a read...
