Everything I take the time to write is pertinent to my point. Please don't quote me out of context.

    Fair nuff?

If only one point in a really long post is being responded to, it removes a lot of clutter. It helps with clarity.

It's easier to just highlight the part of the post, then hit the "quote" button that pops up.

I never have. Please don't fabricate false statements about about me.

If you don't like my style of response, consider these options: 1) Stop posting to me and/or 2) Put me on ignore.

Oh c'mon, that wasn't an accusation. We've obviously come to a point where we just have to agree to disagree on the issue. If no one else has a problem with you editing their comments, then I don't have a problem with you editing their comments either. I just want mine and anyone else's who agrees with me left intact.

And I want a pony. It looks like we'll both be disappointed.

See how brief this is, how readable? That's why it's good practice to edit. Quoting it all and highlighting bits would have added nothing of value and decreased readability.

Except anyone but you who doesnt want to go back and read the whole thread (nobody does that these days) can (will) make all sorts of false presumptions that would be avoided were my entire statement quoted.

If I wanted only your input I would PM you. The purpose of a forum is to discuss with many. Your 'editing for brevity' degrades that dynamic.

First, your wrong. Some people do go back. It depends on whether or not I GAS.

Second, only dumbasses leap to conclusions without all of the facts. In that case, it doesn't matter if the post was edited or not, they are still not going to "go back and read the whole thread".

I often "snip" to limit wasted space and highlight what I am referring to, it makes the reply far easier to understand in context and is extremely easy. I always place a .............SNIP................in the quote box when I do so.

I know that when I walk up to people having a conversation, I expect them to immediately recap the entire past conversation for my benefit, because otherwise I would have no idea of what the conversation was about.

Oh wait. I don't do that. Instead, I listen for a bit and figure it out.

    Most ppl dont.

They'd at least have the context of the entire comment...

    Personal conversations =\= online forums.

Not even apples and oranges. Somewhere more like apples and pasta...

Link or evidence that others are just like you.

Again evidence that it matters. BTW, you've now moved the goal posts. First it was about editing a post, no matter how diverse or convoluted. Now it's about reading the entire thread to have the context of that particular post.

Derail. He wasn't talking about "personal conversations". He was referencing your comments about how people should be required to read the entire thread before commenting and, of course, never, ever edit one of your posts.

'people having a conversation' is 'talking about a personal conversation'...... you dont walk up to people having a personal conversation and say "you're right, you're wrong, here's why, based on this one idea I heard" in real life as was described without offending or alarming ppl, as most folks commonly do in this online setting.

And I didn't say it should be expected to read the entire thread...

And btw, presuming to know my intentions (accusation of 'derail'?) when you've merely misunderstood my point is quite a conceited way of operation...

I do it. It just makes things simpler so someone else doesn't have to read irrelevant things. If I copied everything some of it could be very long, and people might not bother reading it or taking the trouble to understand what's being discussed.

There are ways to edit a quote that are not dishonest.
