Patton was missing the big picture and the victory in Europe was only possible because of the Soviet contribution to the Allies' war efforts and America shipped military equipment to Russia under the Lend-Lease bill to keep the Soviets in the war while the D-Day landings were delayed by two years to avoid wasting Anglo-American troops' lives unnecessarily. Stalin and Churchill reached an agreement to give the Soviet Union complete control of Eastern Europe and it was also agreed that the Red Army would have the honour of being the first to liberate Berlin ahead of Patton or Montgomery's troops and the Cold War did not start in earnest until Churchill's Iron Curtain speech in Fulton.

 

The delegation of US Congressmen had flown to Paris on April 22, 1945, at Eisenhower's request, and had first visited Buchenwald on April 24, 1945, two weeks after the camp was liberated on April 11th. The Congressmen arrived in Dachau on May 1, 1945, the same day that newsreels were first released in American theaters, showing the Nazi atrocities at Buchenwald and Bergen-Belsen. Dachau had been liberated on April 29, 1945, just two days before the Congressmen arrived. The Congressmen described the ceiling of the Dachau gas chamber as being 10 feet high and pointed out that "The gas was let into the chamber through pipes terminating in perforated brass fixtures set into the ceiling." The shower heads, which are really made of sheet metal, are set into the ceiling, as the top photo shows, but the ceiling of the gas chamber is actually 7.6 feet high. All but one of the shower heads had been stolen by May 2001 when the photo above was taken. The empty holes show that the shower heads had not been connected to any pipes.

I actually grew up in the town of Fulton and went to Westminster College where the speech was made. Churchill knew what he was talking about in the speech since he helped make the deal with Stalin. My mother lived in Noel during the war which was close to a German POW camp. The prisoners were allowed to work in the farms around the area, actually volunteered for it. So well did they like and identify with the Americans many stayed or came back after the war to live. The idea that Eisenhower killed a million or more Germans in concentration camps begs the imagination, I am afraid our thread starter is just trolling. No person with high intelligence would believe in the Nazi agenda and only those seeking attention would promote it.

Following the conclusion of the North African campaign in World War II, thousands of German and Italian men were captured by the Allies. The United States agreed to take approximately 425,000 POWs, of which 375,000 were German. From 1943 to 1946, Colorado maintained 3 large camps and more than 40 additional branch camps. The major camps were located at Trinidad housing 2,500 prisoners, near Greeley with more than 2,000 men and Camp Carson at Colorado Springs holding 12,000 POWs. The large camps included a series of buildings surrounded by watch towers, spotlights, barbed wire fences, guards and dogs. Accommodations for men working outside the main camps took a variety of forms from school gymnasiums to warehouses.

After arriving by ship on the east coast, the prisoners were assigned to the various camps. In Colorado most of the POWs were used as agricultural laborers during the planting and harvesting seasons because of the labor shortages on the farms during the war. Some were sent to the mountains to cut telephone poles, railroad ties, or ice for the Denver and Rio Grande Railroad refrigerator cars. When the prisoners were out in the field, security was sometimes lax as there was little temptation to escape with Germany thousands of miles and an ocean away. Sometimes men would temporarily escape to go into the nearby town to acquire food or supplies. Occasionally more serious escapes were attempted as when U.S. Private Dale Maple helped two German POWs to escape to the Mexican border from Camp Hale. Maple was court-martialed for treason and sentenced to life in prison.

Life in the camps was regulated by the rules of the Geneva Convention of 1929 which governed the treatment of prisoners. Boredom was perhaps the most common complaint by prisoners in the camps. Classes were offered in German and English and books were available from libraries. Correspondence courses were even taught through either Colorado University or the University of Minnesota which accepted work in German. For entertainment prisoners could watch movies, participate in sports, organize singing and theater groups and play musical instruments supplied by the YWCA. The Germans did their own cooking at the camps, but in the field the farm families often provided additional meals and sometimes invited them in to the house for a home cooked meal.

Yes, Eisenhower's failure to instantly organize German agriculture and produce bumper crops in the anarchy of the aftermath of the German defeat clearly points to a sinister conspiracy. After all, things like wheat and cattle are ready to harvest in just two or three days tops, maybe another day to get them to the store shelves, and of course building roads and plants doesn't take more than a wave of a hand to throw up. There is simply no excuse, it had to be a deliberate plan.
