Elizabeth Warren Calls for Breakup of Amazon, Google, Facebook
Democratic presidential hopeful puts spotlight on antitrust in tech industry ahead of 2020 campaign

Oh remember when President Clinton said the same thing about the big Dot.Coms and went after Microsoft and tried to break it up and we had the Dot.com bust which helped lead us into a recession?

Here the Democrats are again with their idiotic economic schemes driven by their envy and jealousy of success.

    "
Sen. Elizabeth Warren, the Massachusetts Democrat running for president, on Friday called for the breakup of Amazon.com Inc., Alphabet Inc.’s Google and Facebook Inc., a populist stance that could make antitrust in the technology industry an issue in the 2020 campaign.

“Today’s big tech companies have too much power—too much power over our economy, our society and our democracy,” Ms. Warren said in an online post. “They’ve bulldozed competition, used our private information for profit and tilted the playing field against everyone else. And in the process, they have hurt small businesses and stifled innovation.”

“My administration will make big, structural changes to the tech sector to promote more competition—including breaking up Amazon, Facebook, and Google,” Ms. Warren said."

My parents were wise enough to caution me against joining in w/ 'Social Media'... to this day, I'm the only millennial that I know that hasn't 'signed on' lol... More & more I'm thankful for heeding my parents advice... States like IL are even trying to pass legislation to check social media, along with form #4473 prior to completing a FFL transfer... Probably it's going to distill itself down to Kamal Harris & Berie Sanders. They damage ea. other in the process & Joe Biden comes in last second (avoiding as many debates as possible) & will seek to clinch the Presidency... That's my $.02...

Facebook and Google are going to be curtailed by European courts in their pursuit of every kernel of information they can glean from each of their voluntary suckers from cradle to grave, as their courts seem intent on trying to protect peoples privacy. So far monetary gains are still more important here in America.Amazon is a tougher kettle of fish since they also promote other countless smaller merchants.

Breaking up Big Tech appeals to me. Probably not a good sign for Warren. ;-)

    Warren's Campaign is ALREADY DOA.

Any tiny glimmer of hope that she may have had disappeared when Bernie got in.

It's way past time we revisited Anti-Trust (competition laws) since we changed them in the mid-eighties. It hasn't produced the results advertised but rather the polar opposite. Our markets are now highly concentrated across the board and that state never produces good results. Unfortunately we don't learn from our history.

It's not just tech, but banks, insurance, media, et al. Google would be an easy break-up (there are distinct individual entities) but Facebook would be rather complicated.

The OP is not supported by the articles on what Warren said.

She wants regulatory authority strengthened not the media broken up.

Well the OP is relying on the right wing's embrace of NeoLiberalism over past four decades or you won't get an honest discussion about these issues but rather a full throated defense of the indefensible. It's a rather strange time in our country, our status quo is based on failed radical economic ideas and fighting to change them is seen as radical for example, the right-wing and the mainstream think they believe a competitive market place is a bad thing. It's weird.

Personally, I have no problem with a move that will allow me greater access to a greater number of purchasing options. And if this results in greater opportunity for small businesses, all the better.

    True dat...
Kind of interesting that Biden (not even in the race officially) is leading in Iowa... Sanders would appear to do well in Iowa & then shortly on the heels of Iowa is NH caucus, where he will mop up.

Out of the crowded field I'm most worried about Biden clinching the nom. I just don't think Sanders could win in the general. Harris could do well but she just doesn't come across well anytime she opens her mouth (imho) & she has a lot of personal baggage, lol. Re Beto... my goodness, listening to him giving a speech is downright painful. He has such a forced stylistic way about him like he's diagrammatically yelling; wouldn't do him any favors compared to Trump's ease w/ natural - extemporaneous 'wooing' of an audience, lol.

Iowa Poll: Not even in the race, Joe Biden leads herd of Democrats; Bernie Sanders close behind

Beto I get that you think "Walls end lives" (rothfl), why is it that you have a ginormous chain link fence separating you from 'your' base?

I'd rather have a President who defends us from hostile governments hacking into our government networks and power grids.

I think she is right about this. The situation is equivalent to the robber barons at the turn of the 20th century.

    How so?

""Robber baron" is a derogatory metaphor of social criticism originally applied to certain late 19th-century American businessmen who were accused of using unscrupulous methods to get rich, or expand their wealth, for example Cornelius Vanderbilt taking money from government-subsidized shippers, in order to not compete on their routes.

The term was based on an analogy to the German robber barons, local feudal lords or bandits in Germany who waylaid travellers through their ostensible territory, claiming some tax or fine was owed."

What do you Warren will do about it, if she had her way today what would be different?

What is Warren will do to give you these more options. If you are specifically talking about Amazon what can you only buy on Amazon? I buy lots from Amazon BECAUSE it offers lots of options there are lots of sellers on Amazon. I also buy on EBay, Walmart, Sweetwater, Target, Bestbuy, etc etc etc

What are Facebook and Amazon doing that precludes others from doing the same?

Standard Oil used to actually kill competitors, or at least blow them up. The government stepped in because Rockefeller was using the same tactics as Carlo Gambino

If Facebook is actually a monopoly AND giving people a shitty deal because they have no other choice then somebody is going to step in and make another billion. If they are not then what they are doing, that is, having a monopoly because they deliver the best product cheapest, is perfectly legal, or damned sight ought to be.
