Frankly, I wish politicians would shut the hell up about their health care plans. There is not a one of them who is doing much better than tossing out a plan tested for ideological purity in a focus group loyal to their side. Don 't care if that's a Democrat or a Republican or something else, all of them are talking out of some sort of purity tested, Party Approved piss pot of ideas.

The way to solve our troubles is pragmatically. First, admit that not a single political leader knows what the hell he is talking about. Oh maybe they have a few points right, possibly even some details here and there. But in a terms of a comprehensive dig into root causes and fixes, they are full of leaky cow butt smoothies on the Western Plains.

So here's the deal, study what all First World, Industrialized, Capitalist, Representative Democracies do to pay for health care. Set no limitations. Be it a country the Republicans deride or one the Democrats deride, or that either champion, study them all. Examine what works and why. What does not work, and why. Consider how all that works and does not work apply to the American situation.

Do not forget scale. A small, wealthy, mostly homogeneous country may have a beautiful system on the face of it but how does it scale up to a raucous, chaotic, enormously diverse nation of over 325 million people?

Keep in mind that "Universal" does not have to mean Single Payer, Single Provider, or both. It can simply mean a mandate under the law that every citizen be covered .... somehow.

My own take is that Germany has the best approach. It certainly has the oldest in the world, and costs about half of what we spend per person. But I am not wedded to the results of my own studies or to Europe. There are other continents and nations worth studying.
