I disagree, but understand his point of view. He views these people as potential customers while others view overpopulation as toxic for the environment.

What no reason for his fear of declining population?

It's not really a threat to civilization, it's a threat to our civilization's social welfare systems that work by having young working age people pay for the retirement of old retirement age seniors.

If the birth rates decline heavily that cohort of working age citizens will feel the squeeze quite considerably, as will government coffers.

it's a threat to the economy, but not a threat to civilization, in fact reducing the population long term probably a good thing

if the rich stop being so greedy and give some back to society, people will have more children

If there are no massive natural and/or human disasters, then he is correct. At the current birth rates the culture that will be dominate, will be muslim!

You need to read more. The bigest reason for the birthrate to fall is prosperity.

I think it's a good thing. The more people, limited resources, spells trouble ahead. This is good news not bad news.

If the entire current population of the world was moved into one area and put there at the same population density as the city of Pairs, we would ALL fit in the area of the country of Mexico. There's room to grow.

For all those that say there are just too many people in this world and we need to reduce the numbers, I have a suggestion for you. You are not going to like it and you are not going to do it. Take the lives of your kids, spouse, and yourself.

OK, which are you? Rich? Poor?

In case you ask, I'm rich, but, not in the classical definition that most use here in the USA.

But how much land does it take to support each person on the planet? How many resources? How much pollution are we causing?

I agree with Musk. It will definitely mess with the pyramid shape of our economic Ponzi scheme, fewer working people to support the aged and not working. It’s also that people are not only consumers, users of resources, but are also assets. Human ideas and creativity are an extremely valuable resource.

Projections of disaster from over population haven’t materialized. Along with our growing global population have come extraordinary improvements in human conditions lifting billions out of crushing poverty.

The welfare state requires population growth. Each two people must have 2.1 children (or 2.2, depending on the study) or we run out of resources to support the people who don't produce. Its not necessarily that civilization will collapse, but the welfare state will collapse and we'll return to 'social darwinism' (nonproducers starving to death). Some people (nonproducers) consider that 'collapse.'

Or we could return to the days of the elderly and infirm living with and being supported at home by their families. But some people consider that 'collapse' as well...

Or we could have more kids.
