OK so here is what we have a thought experiment about either a massive solar EMP or an EMP attack by another country. The question is who would be more likely to survive. Setup: a massive electronic pulse has knocked out basically everything with a microprocessor making them junk. No communication, no banks, no supermarkets or restaurants. You're on your own. No water, sanitation, authorities may try to help, but more than likely will use resources to protect their own. City (New York, Los Angeles, Detroit, etc.) What do you do? Are you strong enough to protect your family? Do you have the means to protect your family. My guess is that gangs will band together and take over Walmarts, shopping centers, etc. Do you band together with your neighbors in cooperation? Do you even know your neighbors? Do yu get out of the City and try to survive in the wilds? Are you strong enough to stake out an area on the beach to catch fish? Are you strong enough to keep possession of fish when caught? How do you get through your life without your cell phone, internet, etc.? In other words if the world was set back 100 - 200 years, could you survive? My guess is the big cities would become war zones with everybody fighting for finite resources. Rural and Country: I grew up rural and currently live rural, I know my neighbors and frequently have dinner or BBQs with them...I have lived in large cities around the world and have found most people to be kind of insulated. Not all. But most. So I believe the rural, DIY type of personality is going to be better off if this happened. We know how to garden, hunt, fish, and maintain vehicles that are pre-computer. So with no banks, what would you use for currency? I think bullets would become quite expensive and firearms near priceless. I would really like to hear from people in the cities if they even have considered this?
People in cities would be worse off, since they depend on a supply chain that will break down instantly, but people in both cities and suburbs will face limitations on potable water almost immediately. People will be thirsty long before they get hungry. People might end up killing over bottled water.
That's why I live rural and have my own well, and yes I have off the grid capability, both solar and wind.
Hard to imagine but not out of the realm of possibility. Cities would be hellholes and I live in the city. I don't entertain the thought but have been offered refuge in the country by those that do.
I have an electric pump that might not work, but the old pump handle will still draw water. The 12v system is the same as a car battery and the current inverter does not have a chip, so it might survive.
How far away is it, because more than likely, most cars are not going to work...How long would it take to walk?
Tough 4x4 if it works but an hour away. Used to have a Mercedes diesel that ran mechanical fuel injection and would not be effected by an EMP. Probably can figure out how to get my old Jeep Cherokee running.
What about your charge controller? A lot of those have fancy electronics on them. But electricity aside, it's better to be in the country for the food. Anyone who opens their front door and sees their grocery store is going to be worlds ahead of anyone dependent on a supply chain.
