Well, of course, but the OP was talking about a broken fluorescent tube, not a sealed one.

I can run 1,300,000 different color/temperatures with my LED's including various natural lighting scenarios.

Suit yourself. Just don't expect me to credit your unsubstantiated claims. Others can decide for themselves.

When comparing or rating all types of lighting Luminaires for producing natural light, they all are compared to the incandescent light. The incandescent light being the closet to natural sun light.

Every thing has to be based upon something.

Look at an incandescent light bulb as a micro mini sun. It even produces heat and you can cast a shadow. Some luminaires produce little heat and some you can't even cast a shadow.

How do I know you're not ISIS and you want me to tell you what's the best form of security lighting to use for your WMD bunker sitting out there in the Iraqi desert ?

Maybe because I didn't ask you to tell me what's the best form of security lighting to use for a WMD bunker sitting out there in the Iraqi desert?

It's based on natural light and incandescent also come in a wide variety of color, I was wrong it is 16,000,000 and temps. I can set my LED's by temp alone through a wide variety of natural lighting schedules, even automatic adjust to what the outside lighting is doing to even matching the color and level balance on the TV show I am watching.

I'm not claiming I don't use LED's, in fact today's LED flashlights have a white light. Remember when they were all blue ?

When the LCF's first appeared there was only a bright white, today they have natural light but it's not even close to real natural light.

The LED will evolve over time.

I don't know a lot about lights but was told that my double ended HQI metal halide bulbs I use on m y reef tanks are the closest thing we have to natural sunlight...in the 10k color range. Is that true?

It sounds like you haven't stocked up on any incandescent light bulbs ?

That reminds me, my incandescent light bulb stockpile needs to be replenished before they are no longer available. They are getting as hard to find as .22 long rifle ammo.

When it comes to HID (High Intensity Discharge) lighting the metal halide comes closest to natural sun light. But as you probably already know, they aren't cheap but they are cheap to operate and have a long life span.

If you don't have a buggy whip, it's very likely you wouldn't live more than a year if the world was knocked off the grid.

Invest in a buggy whip, it's like a life insurance policy.

I'm not convinced about the advertised lifetime of low energy bulbs but they are definitely cheaper in the long run.

LED bulbs last a lot longer than incandescent bulbs. At the moment I have only used them in torches and bicycle lights and never seen one fail. Previously, the incandescent bulbs failed regularly.

    - - - Updated - - -

In my hotel I replaced about 300 incandescent bulbs with energy saving light bulbs and none have ever exploded. You may have a problem with your electric circuit if bulbs are exploding or you bought faulty bulbs. My electric bill for lighting is about a third of what it was including cost of replacement.

    - - - Updated - - -

I have a couple of hundred incandescent candle bulbs and incandescent 60w bulbs in my cupboards that will never be used

Natural light is quite horrible IMO when trying to read books.

When you see advertised on a package that a light bulb, etc. has a life span lets say 1,600 hours, what it really means that 1/2 of one hundred light bulbs would still be working after 1,600 hours. Just a FYI.

There is a flea market close where I live and I buy them in a package of 8 for 10 dollars. They are not as bright as advertised, the supposedly 60W light only give out about what an old 40W use to. So next time I go to the flea market I plan on buying 100W to get my 60W worth of light.

I do get that but it seems that very few actually reach the advertised life time. I wonder what are the test conditions - i bet it is not normal use. Though, this would probably also apply to traditional light bulbs.

I think they just turn the lights on and leave them burning until they burn out.

Now if you are old enough to remember when "America was great" when electricity was cheap like 3 cents per kilowatt hours and when you looked at high rise offices building that usually used fluorescent lighting, they always left all the lights on 24/7. It was cheaper back then leaving the lights on 24/7. You don't see that anymore, the PC light police would send in their SWATT enforcement team today.

Fluorescent lamps aren't really rated by how many hours they last but by how many times you have to restart them. They are good for turning them on and off so many times. So it was cheaper to leave them on all of the time than to turn them off every day and having to replace them sooner if they would have left them on 24/7.

Cycling on an off too often can have detrimental effects on incandescent and the CFL's which at least when I tried them were advised not to short cycle them which people complained about as in a closet or a storage room.
