Do you have a PSA poster for ropes and belts since 11,500 people kill themselves each year by hanging/suffocation? Does this statistic only include lawfully owned firearms?

Once again, citing the debunked and discredited work by Arthur Kellermann.

Thoroughly discredited junk studies are all the gun-fearful have to work with. Watching them implode into hysterics lately is just getting more and more sad... but oddly satisfying.

that's the kind of women we need. its bogus to claim the only way you stop an assault is to kill but that lady looks like she will shoot well. bet no one tries to rape her

And that can often involve a death (the fetus, or the woman herself, in some cases).

I think that it's safe to say that removing guns from legal owners doesn't make death by guns go away.

I get it that some people don't think that guns are good to have, but until you're honest I don't see the need to waste time arguing about it.

But as Australia shows, removing guns from the general population makes rape and assault and violent crime in general increase a lot. After the gun ban ion 1996, violent crime in AUS increased 44%. Every life "saved" by reducing homicide cost a couple hundred rapes and severe assaults.

Why can't certain outspoken Aussies spend more of their time telling their commonwealth friends how to live, and leave America alone? Personally, I don't care what happens in England, they can solve their own problems or perish in the failing, I know I don't want limeys telling my country what to do, so I shall offer the same courtesy...

6492 gun crimes for 60 million kind of shows that gun control did work in the UK BUT really we weren't gunophiles like the US when they banned handguns I knew not a single person that had one. You were always more likely to get stabbed than shot in the UK even in the 70's before gun control it was our thing. Getting shotgun is not hard and most people would have no issues getting the license.

It's not hard to get a handgun (illegally) in the UK I've been offered one twice in Nottingham although you never see them in Leicester we just stab each other like we did for the last 30 years lol.

Outside of London you are in far more danger from Chavs on a Saturday night than you are guns or knives! They use their fists (With gold sovereign of course) with the added power of Beer and mates lol.

To judge the effectiveness of any new gun control law, like the handgun ban in 1996, you have to love at the crime rates before and after the law. Like you mentioned, gun crime wasn't a significant risk even prior to 1996.

Gun ban worked in UK but would never work in the USA in my opinion. Switzerland also shows how guns are not the problem it runs far deeper in the US than guns.

    I'm for the 2nd amendment!

More unsubstantiated lies, countries with strict gun control do not have significantly lower suicide rates. In fact some of them have higher suicide rates than the US. When I see the blatant dishonesty, its hard to take gun grabbers seriously...

Which parts of that poster are unsubstantiated lies ?

Whether or not other countries have higher suicide rates than the US (and they do, according to this Wikipedia article, the US ranks 48th globally) is irrelevant, the poster claims that in the United States you are 22 times more likely to kill yourself with a gun than you are an intruder.

And the so-called "research" upon which the claim was based, has long been discredited for decades. As has the methodology that was utilized in acquiring the figures being used as a basis for the argument.

Do you have evidence for this or do I just have to accept your assertion that this is the case ?

According to the CDC there were around 22,000 gun suicides in the US in 2015:

    https://www.cdc.gov/nchs/fastats/suicide.htm

I guess the question is, how many intruders were killed in the United States by homeowners ? If the answer is around 1,000 then the poster is correct, you are 22 times more likely to kill yourself than you are to kill an intruder.

Given that suicides account for around 2/3 of gun deaths, then you're twice as likely to kill yourself with a gun than anyone else. The vast majority of the deaths to others will be homicides, accidents and/or killing family members leaving relatively few being killing of an intruder.

True, but this is only meaningful if the only way to use a gun in self-defense is to kill someone with it.

The lie is in the fact that in self-defense uses with a firearm over 97% involve the gun not even being fired. According to their argument, if a man breaks into my house with the intent of murdering me, and I shoot him and he collapses immediately but lives to be prosecuted, then I didn't have a successful defensive gun use; entirely because my attacker lived.

I like the segue to reducing suicides as a rationale for gun control..plucks the heart strings , very manipulative..however, after 15 years in mental health, I am pretty comfortable saying if someone wants to commit suicide, they will find away , once again, the gun control dream hangs on creating an institutionalized environment for all of us , nothing more ...controlling everybody in the name of trying to control a few

Despite what people claim in surveys whatever defensive gun use that is occurring is not resulting in fewer bodies in the morgue. In fact, Kellermann found that murder victims were more likely to have lived in homes where guns were kept than the living people they were compared to.

Can anyone come up with a study that used the same methodology (case control) which came to the opposite conclusion? Feel free to post a link to it here.

    case control study definition:

"A study that compares patients who have a disease or outcome of interest (cases) with patients who do not have the disease or outcome (controls), and looks back retrospectively to compare how frequently the exposure to a risk factor is present in each group to determine the relationship between the risk factor and the disease."

You're grossly oversimplifying things. Means as well as intent make a difference. Someone who tries to commit suicide with a gun is more more likely to be successful than someone who uses another means.

What worked for England was not having very many handguns both before and after their handgun ban.

And a criminal populace not given to using them. Russia, on the other hand, has the same level of strict gun laws as the UK yet suffers a homicide rate well over that of the US.
