You already are. You have been for years.

Why even call it a goal, when it was a battle fought and won long ago? Are you looking to warp 'equality' into 'equity'? Or are you just fresh out of purpose and recycling old woes?

A democracy predicated upon meritocracy. Meritocracy is equality because it does not depend on things we either can't change or can't easily change - like race, gender, class, etc. Anyone, of any race or gender, and from any socio-economic demographic, can get ahead on his own merit. It's the ultimate equality.

No one is 'locked into a failure paradigm' in the First World. As you say, it's cultural. You can change your culture any time you like. If it's important enough to you, you'll do it.

The only way you can 'help' the next generation, is by refusing to reward failure. They have to know that it's not an option. Any other kind of help .... especially any kind which is merely free money .... will just perpetuate the problem. Free money has never protected those determined to fail, from poverty. That cultural shift has to happen for any improvement to be realised.

So why are you still failing them with your enabling? When we enable lab rats to fail it's considered cruel. Why do it to humans?

I would suggest that one's merit is greatly influenced by all of those factors. For instance, women make better care-givers. Men make better warriors. If you're born in the upper middle class, there's a good chance that's what you'll end up being yourself. So on and so forth.

What can be controlled somewhat is the corruption that always seems to sour institutions with time. If the professional and administrative classes can enforce the checks and balances put in place, then you can live with the fact that parents will naturally wish to give their children the most help possible [and this should be encouraged]. Expecting the government to level the playing field results in the type of moronic policies we see in place today. Can you imagine telling somebody 40 years ago that they would be teaching kids that they are defective because they have a certain skin color?

You play the hand you're dealt and hope for the best. Fortunately for Americans, there is great opportunity for most to advance through persistence and hard work.

If you can afford medical care (or medical insurance) but I can't .... where's the "equality"? I might have the "opportunity" as a whatever but if I don't have the means to achieve it then I don't know what good the opportunity is. "Equality" means equality, not a possibility. A guarantee however does provide equality. I am talking about the basics. I am not saying that everyone ought to be provided a diploma in electronics.

    Who can't get insurance?
ACA has been law for 12 yrs.

I didn't have the means, I worked to get the means. One just has to get them.

Actually that's exactly what it means. The opportunity .. the possibility .. only.

It's on each of us to exploit (or not) opportunity/possibility as we see fit.

Yes, equality of opportunity. That's been guaranteed for many years.

Those who can't. "Sicko": Michael Moore.

So, you are now going to use circular logic and ignore what I said in my last reply?

I understand. I'm only saying that guarantees (by law) are necessary.

    Guarantee of what.
A certain standard of living to do nothing?

That's a Utopian dream, nothing more.

Laws exist to keep all men equal before the law. Liberals and so-called progressives are now attacking that under the Woke banner, in which white people are portrayed as aggressors and black folks, no matter how successful an individual may be, are portrayed as victims.

Some might argue that we've never had the rule of law in this country.

They have a point, but I disagree with that view. I think I'm just a hopeless romantic idealogue sometimes.

You have a selfish, unsympathetic heart. Without knowing or discussing any details you willingly condemn humanity.

That's pretty much true. Equal opportunity basically means get the hell out of the way of all individuals

On the contrary .. anyone who would ride on the backs of others without good reason, has the selfish and unsympathetic heart. That we have to carry so many, is the evidence that too many lack the selflessness and sympathy necessary for a social conscience.

And FTR, a social conscience isn't waffling on about racism .. it's doing the hard yards to ensure you're a solid, self-reliant, crime-free, clean-living, and responsible citizen.
