A rundown of major events since Turkey launched "Peace Spring" attacks in Syria:

"Erdogan’s threats came a day after Turkish troops began a major incursion into northeastern Syria, drawing criticism from the U.S., many European nations and Arab states.

The lira hovered near its weakest level since late August against the dollar while stocks and government bonds fell amid the threat of punitive actions by the U.S. Congress.

Erdogan announced the beginning of the cross-border military offensive, code-named “Peace Spring” on Wednesday, three days after President Donald Trump said U.S. troops in the area wouldn’t stand in the way. Ankara says the operation is meant to force back Kurdish militants controlling the border area and target Islamic State militants.

Here’s a rundown of major events since Wednesday afternoon in local time."

Crackdown on dissent on social media in Turkey.

Ground invasion into northern Syria supported by F-16 air support.

Turkey holds by far the largest number of refugees from the Syrian war and is now threatening to forcibly relocate all these to Europe which is likely the beginning of yet another vast humanitarian crisis in the region and a new phase of the Syrian conflict which has raged across that country since 2011.

Turkey has always sheltered refugees.. During WW2 they sheltered European Jews. They sheltered Iraqis during Gulf wars 1 and 2 and now this...

There is no reason for the Turks or the Kurds to pay for Assad's cruel insanity.

Tell him if he wants the US and Russia to rebuild Syria he has to cede Eastern Syria to the Kurds.

There is an agreement between the EU and Turkey that helps Turkey with financial aid in return for preventing Syrian, and other refugees from crossing into Greece or other border points. That agreement is now in jeopardy as I read it.

The war in Syria was more than just Assad's cruel insanity although he is a cruel and murderous leader to his enemies. The Kurds best course going forward may be to try and make a separate peace with Assad in return for protection. I don't know if Assad can be trusted but that may be the only option now that Trump has thrown them under the bus.

This whole story is annoying to me because the media keeps framing it as "The Kurds" which is completely BS, sure there are Kurds in the SDF/YPG, but to claim Turkey is attacking Kurdistan is mostly false.

I feel for Turkey, they have millions of people with nothing to do and no nations will help them, I honestly can't blame them for this. We will see how far it goes and no, I am not happy about the "accident" with US special forces.

But I refuse to support, "We stay there as a police force", I am done with the Middle East.

Yes, Turkey has sheltered around 3,5 mill refugees from Syria, more than any other country, but they are not left alone. The deal between Ankara and Brussels grants Turkey 6 billion Euros in financial support. This money doesn't go to Erdogan directly as he insisted, instead Brussels supports individual projects by the International Red Cross and Red Crescent, Doctors without Borders , etc. Erdogan himself doesn't see that money. He's pretty good at using these refugees to blackmail and silence those that are now criticizing his military offence, and, unfortunately, I think he'd be ruthless enough to do whatever it takes to achive his goals. That guy cannot be trusted in any way.
    "Peace Spring", utterly perverted.

I mostly agree with the US pulling its forces out of the middle east but there is a smart way and a dumb way to go about it. This seems like there was a tacit agreement of what would happen once the US began withdraw - either that or Trump completely misunderstood the implications and Erdogan's intentions which is more likely knowing Trump.

The US was never there as a police force. They were there to uphold their own interests and those of their allies.

Turkey has become Europe's Mexico and Central America.

Europe...push #2 for Arabic and prepare yourself for handing out a whole crap load of free stuff and having a falafel truck on every street corner.

    Isn't diversity great ?

"Peace Spring" he probably figured I'll find the two most fluffy and innocent sounding words... stick them together to name this campaign then go and bomb the crap out of the Kurds

Boy, I am starting to surmise that you don't like diversity. Sure hope you live in a gated community somewhere with strict strata requirements. Even then, no guarantee your daughter won't run off with the guy who cuts the lawns.........:cynic:

    Actually, I quite like falafels.

Turkey has borne a big part of the refugee crisis but they are compensated for it and they do have a dog in this fight as proven by current events.

Diversity weakens a country and balkanizes the society of a nation.

Name one country that survived diversity...

Wrong...Erdogan is not talking about new refuges, he is talking about current Syrians in Turkey. Europe had already deserved also... Because they did not help us.

Also it would be a great contradiction. You all claim that Turkey fights against Kurds(civilians as well)...but on the other hand you are talking about new refuges (Kurds)to move Turkey, then Turkey allow them to move Europe!!! How can that be happened ?

    You are all biased.

We, Turks only fight against PKK/YPG/PYD along with ISIS, our war is not against Kurdish people. We have about 18 million Turkish Kurds in our country, we have many many Kurdish Turks in army. Your CNN lies everyday.

When I was on the east coast during the 70's and 80's I did drink a lot of beer at IRA bars in Boston and NYC.

    FYI:
The reason Great Britain didn't have any British army units fighting in Vietnam during the Vietnam War was because they were preoccupied dealing with the IRA at home.

Though there were some British military advisers in Vietnam because of their experience of killing commies in Indonesia.

West Germany wanted to send German soldiers to Vietnam but the French said no !

So West Germany sent a hospital ship that was usually off shore of DaNang and had German nurses from Saigon to Quang Tri but these round eyes would only have affairs with officers.

Listen Turk. You cant scare us in anyway. The Balkan is closed.

You should be very careful. What will you do when we send the turks who live in Europe back where they come here? They never integrated anyways and are the scum of society.

Turkey is a pathetic 3rd world country and i honestly see this escalation as positive thing. Not much makes more fun than smashing Turkey.

European countries invited Turkish laborers to work in their factories and services. So then poor and uneducated Turks immigrated to Europe. They are now second and third generations and having citizenships. Most of them are legal they have right of habitation, they are not illegal immigrants or refuges. So you cannot send them back, they are your citizens, your people. We don't want them anyway, because they are culturally messed up and they lost real Turkish identity values--- so make soap with them, I don't care ! :D

Syrians is not our problem. Everyday, we prevent tens of Syrian in Aegean Sea. We are not guards of European Union. Especially when you don't support our Syrian Policy we are never guards of European Union.

We have one of the best health care system of World so very good third world country

I was referring to that Turkey has been used as a transit point for Syrian refugees and Obama's JV Team like how Central American wannabe illegal aliens and MS-13 gang members use Mexico to travel through when trying to get to America before they build the Trump Wall.
