I will answer your question. In many of these cases, no, I doubt I would have the courage and strength to bring up some of these children, and I can't help but wonder if I would abort, if I were a woman in those shoes.
However, I can't help but feel termination may not truly really be the right thing to do in many of these situations.

Not every situation is the same, and I would hesitate to have a blanket solution covering all these different scenarios.

I do believe there are many cases, however, where fetuses are terminated who should not be.

Good....WHO PAID FOR THAT? The mother? The taxpayers? Mr. Koop?

And again..ALL CIRCUMSTANCES ARE NOT ALIKE so you CANNOT base rights on ONE incident.

Koop has to be the greatest doctor who ever lived. I certainly respect his opinion. He is a great example of why the mother and her doctor need the government to leave them alone.

How about if that defect is because the child is a girl?

Parents in China attempted to feed daughter to pandas

That's one way around the 'one child' rule.

(Fortunately the parents didn't realize that pandas are vegetarians for the most part)

Thank you for your honesty. I can only imagine how hard the decision would be for the parents.

I still don't believe that necessarily means they should make it, in all cases.

I am curious if there are any cases where abortion supporters would seek to force a woman to abort, or whether she has complete autonomy to bring a child into the world no matter how much suffering it will face.

I really could not imagine such a situation. Why would anyone force a woman to abort?

If there are valid reasons to get a late-term abortion, couldn't there potentially be viable reasons to require the woman to abort?
(Maybe if not late-term, then earlier, if certain types of abnormalities are detected)

It is not something I know much about, I do not comment on abortion very often, could you explain what that situation might be? For instance if the fetus was dead and the woman insisted on no abortion? Or if the woman lacked the mental capacity to make an informed decision?

A horrendous horrendous defect, where the child would survive but live a horrible terrible life, maybe having little brain function or requiring expensive medical care to avoid dying an agonizing and prolonged death.

In this thread, we are discussing abortion for fetal abnormalities and defects.

My uneducated first impression would be that no woman would be forced to have an abortion.

That would be mine too, but I've found that women don't seem to be able to rationalise negatively. In other words the 'motherhood' side of it would outweigh and impair sound judgement.

The woman would either have a C-section if she intended to keep the pregnancy or an abortion if she didn't. An ultrasound would have detected the absence of arms and legs long before it became a late term issue.

FORCING a woman to have an abortion is against the law and ANYONE should know that DUHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH.....good lord !!!

YES, there COULD BE FORCED ABORTIONS.....and the situation would be that women had the right to their own bodies taken away through laws banning abortion.

Once pregnant women lose the right to their own bodies OF COURSE they can then be forced to have abortions and FORCED to do a lot of other things since they do not have the right to their own bodies.

That's why Pro-Choice upholds women as HUMANS who have rights but "others" don't seem to think so.

So you think women are really stupid ? So maybe what? We keep them in pens to control their breeding?

Mothers mental abilities are impaired ? !!!!!!!!!!!

Or you think motherhood is stupid?

Women become irrational when pregnant and become mothers ???

Or you think women are irrational because they have maternal instincts when pregnant and that's bad?

Should the right to their own bodies be taken away because YOU don't think they can reason?

Please note the question marks indicating those are questions...

Not all women have an ultrasound early in the pregnancy.

Some abnormalities are not easy to detect via ultrasound early in the pregnancy.

What if the baby is healthy but just ugly?
What if the defect is that the baby is ugly?
Is it okay to get a late-term abortion then?
How about if they do not realize it until after the baby comes out? Is it okay to not resuscitate?
If it's not one of those nice beautiful babies can the woman smother it with a pillow?

There are plenty of medical conditions where the individual can still lead a fairly normal life but will just have an ugly or disfigured outward physical appearance.
Is it the woman's choice? At what point does her choice run out in that type of situation?

Where do we draw the line? (i.e. can the woman just get an abortion or choose to leave the baby to die with any defect?)

What do you mean by "ugly"?

If a baby is born simply "ugly" why would it need resuscitating?

Of course a woman can't LEGALLY smother it with a pillow or "leave the baby to die" ....where would you get the idea that anyone thought they could? Another Really Weird question.

I hope you don't mean what I think you mean by that.

I meant if there's a baby with some physical abnormality which affects its appearance but not its health, but that baby is also having problems breathing (for other reasons) and could easily be resuscitated, but maybe they decide not to.

Would you support the woman's decision not to resuscitate?

Some are all of that? Pregnancy plays havoc with hormones and hormones control the brain.

    "Hormones and emotions during pregnancy
The altered hormone levels can affect how you feel. You may at times feel low or tearful or be easily irritated. For a while, you may experience mood swings during pregnancy or feel that your emotions are out of control. Often these symptoms ease after the first three months of being pregnant. The feelings of loss of control are also linked to the changes in your body, and it is a good idea to remind yourself that they are all designed to provide a healthy environment for your growing baby and to help you give birth without problems."
