Impose my will on china by reducing imports from china?

    That is very strange logic

The problem is china is imposing its will on America by practicing mercantilism

    I'm sure they would disagree.
I thought that was the purpose of the tariffs.

To reduce our balance of payments deficit, preserve American jobs and reduce dependence on a foreign government that is hostile to us

So just to make sure. You would be happy if we stopped buying 300 billion in Chinese goods forever while paying 25% more for the same stuff? You would do this even though the rest of the world had an advantage over us because they payed 25% less?

Are they threatening to bomb us or something if we don't buy their stuff?

25% more that remains in the US instead of enriching china?

They are more sofisticated than that

Mercantilism is economic warfare without the use of firearms

But victory and conquest are still the gosls

We are a capitalist country. If you think US companies are going to give up sales to save some US jobs you haven't been watching what they are doing after only a few months.
Have you noticed the US car companies are going to stop production of small cars? Do you see our competitors in other countries doing that? Do you see more jobs in those auto plants?
How's it working out for the Harley factory.

    How about this one?

Alibaba founder Jack Ma said the Chinese company will no longer create one million new jobs in America, as he had previously promised U.S. President Donald Trump due to the rocky trade relationship between the two nations.

    ---------------------

Ma had said he wanted to enable one million small businesses and farmers in America access to sell goods to customers at Alibaba in China and throughout Asia. How that would translate into one million jobs was left undefined.

I'll make the prediction that in June 2020 the trade deficit with China will be the same.

Reducing chinese imports will not lose US sales

But we will have more control over our market instead of being at the mercy of the chinese dictatorhip

China wants to dominate every industry in the worold

And when they do the world will be their bitch

lol you think everyone in China has to do whatever Xi told them, but the reality is they have their own choice to whoever they want to do business with. Ma decision was solely a business decision.

    Yeah,pretty much

And that includes not only Ma but American executives doing business in china

The only caveat is that the chinese dictatorship does not yet have absolute intelligence so willful disobedience does still exist

But the cheaters are living on borrowed time

    Tariffs.
China’s economy rebounded through the first quarter, a welcome sign of stabilization for the world and handing the government room for maneuver as trade negotiations with the United States enter a crucial stage.

Gross domestic product rose 6.4 percent in the first three months from a year earlier — matching last quarter’s pace and beating economists’ estimates. Factory output in March jumped 8.5 percent from a year earlier, much higher than forecast. Retail sales expanded 8.7 percent while investment was up 6.3 percent in the year to date.
    --------------------------------
Meantime, the latest estimates for gross domestic product (GDP) for Q1 point to another round of deceleration. The median nowcast for this year's first three months is a sluggish 1.4% increase (based on the seasonally adjusted annual rate). If correct, the US economy is on track to post a softer growth trend for the third straight quarter.

I should qualify my position on china by saying that its a house of cards living very recklessly

blunders by china will likely plunge the entire world into a depression

So it does matter what happens to them but only in the contaxt of avoiding harm to Ametica

For 2018 as a whole, the deficit grew to $621 billion — the highest since 2008, the Commerce Department said Wednesday. When the service sector is excluded, the gap was even greater, rising to a record $891.3 billion.

The overall trade deficit has grown by $119 billion in the two years since Trump took office.
