So its hard for an atheist or even an agnostic to wrap their minds around the need for exorcisms. If you believe demonic possession is a form of mental illness then you have to believe that the mentally ill can have some amazing powers. Powers that seem "other worldly". Religious delusions are a symptom of psychosis usually from drugs, schizophrenia, or bipolar. They are finding out more what causes these problems and it appears to be partially genetic and partly environmental.
This isn't that hard read the Roman Catholic guidelines, does the person speak languages they cannot possibly know or move objects or have powers of precognition or knowledge they shouldn't have and do this under scientific impartial conditions a good number of times but I don't need to believe in god or something to believe their is life we don't understand. A race of malevolent beings who don't have bodies isn't something science fiction hasn't come up with and would leave a chance gods are real. But we need scientific evidence which we don't have under proper laboratory conditions.
