The explosion occurred at the station "Sennaya" and "Tehnologicheskii institut". There are victims and dead, including children.

Main suspect at the moment, a potential suicide bomber, Akbarzhon Jalilov, russian citizen, born in city of Osh, and lived in Petersburg at least for several years. He said to have connection with radical islamist organisations, but nothing is certain yet.

Kirgizstan, Kazakhstan, and other republics of Middle Asia are not part of Russian Federation and never were, though - just as RF - they have been parts of Soviet Union.

I remind you, that Soviet Union does not - and never was - a synonim of Russia. This is a common mistake, based on foreign media calling soviet citizens 'russians'. Many top figures of Union were not of russian descend, or had mixed heritage. Among them - Lening, Stalin, Khruschev, Brejhnev, Andropov, also Kaganovich, Trotsky, Dzerjinsky, Beria, Yagoda and others.

After dissolution of Soviet Union RF has inherited the responsibility for nuclear arsenal and Union's seat in United Nations. Never the less, historically RF is not a direct continuation of Soviet Union, and is not solely responsible for any event, that took place during period of time, when RF - previously RSFSR - was a part of Soviet Union.

 

Kyrgizstan, Kazakhstan were part of the imperialistic Russian empire since the 1800s which imposed depredations upon those people and others in the Caucasus. The Soviets continued doing the same evils. Nobody called it terrorism or imperialism when they committed such evils but are readily disposed to characterize the counter actions as such today. Two wrongs don't make a right but it certainly explains why people take such actions on their own just like they did in Vietnam, Algeria, or even in our own USA versus the British.

 

Empire was disbanded, with last emperror resigning the crown during February Revolution in 1917. It has been reformed in couple dosen socialistic republics, that has been reformed in democratic sovereign republics during the dissolution of Soviet Union in 1991.

Akbarzhon Dzhalilov is from Kyrgyzstan and his hometown Osh is a hub for radical Islamist groups. Dzhalilov may have travelled to Syria or Iraq and been trained as a jihadist.
