I knew that food producers were allowed to misguide consumers in regard to foods being advertised as "natural" that aren't; advertising chickens as "cage-free" because there is a window in their enclosure, etc. but I didn't know how bad it really was until I watched this short video. I didn't realize, for example, that "blueberry" bagels, muffins, and cereals may not contain any actual blueberries; sugar and food coloring are used to make fake berries. Yet the manufacturers are allowed to call it blueberry cereal, muffins, etc. and LIE. What is the point of having an FDA and alleged consumer protection type agencies when manufacturers are allowed to lie with impunity and say their product contains something that it doesn't?

Don't be fooled by deceptive advertising. Read the list of ingredients on the foods you buy.

My personal current complaint is against the meat at WalMart. In order to save costs, WalMart doesn't have a meatcutter/butcher in the back cutting and packaging meat, they sell pre-packaged meat that comes in cases directly from their suppliers. All that the store personnel have to do is open the case and stock the shelves.

Which isn't really that bad, except...

WalMart meat uses a process called "modified atmosphere packaging" to keep it looking fresh. As the oxygen in the air reacts with cut meat, it will change color from red to dark reddish-brown - we've all seen meat that looks like it's old and almost spoiled at the grocery store, usually it's marked down for quick sale because it's at the end of its shelf life.

But WalMart meat doesn't have that problem, because when the meat is packaged at the supplier, they draw the oxygen out of the package and replace it with other gases. One of these gases reacts with the myoglobin in the tissue to form a bright cherry-red pigment, so the meat keeps the bright red color we consumers associate with freshness longer than normal.

What is this gas, you ask? It's carbon monoxide.

Carbon monoxide? Isn't that what comes out of the tailpipe of my automobile? Isn't that called the "silent killer" because it kills hundreds of people annually who have defective furnaces or space heaters?

Yep, that's it. But don't worry, your federal Food and Drug Administration has placed carbon monoxide on the GRAS (Generally Recognized As Safe) list for food packaging. It's okay to eat it, just don't breathe it.

This is the same Food and Drug Administration that says (insert name of drug here) is safe, then five years later I'm seeing commercials on TV from shyster lawyers hustling business for a class action lawsuit against the pharmaceutical manufacturer.

A quick search on the Internet reveals class action lawsuits are currently being filed against the manufacturers of Vioxx, Propecia, Plavix, Prozac, and Celexa - just to name the few I found in one minute of Googling.

Whether or not these lawsuits have merit is irrelevent - the point is that these pharmaceuticals passed FDA review and were released to the public. Now, it seems that there are unforseen side effects.

Me personally, I don't want my food adulterated. I want good, fresh, wholesome, SAFE food - not a product that has been packaged in way that not only retards spoilage by using a poisonous gas, but leads me to believe the product is fresher than it is.
