Facebook friends can be anything from casual acquaintances to true friends, just depends on how picky you are.
I don't post anything on Facebook that I care if other people know. It's like talking in public, not like having a private conversation.
I don't need Facebook to keep up with my true friends. Frankly I find it useless for that. Nor do I need it to keep up with acquaintances. All I would need Facebook for is to keep up with Facebook friends Facebook friends are not friends if they were they would call you you are friends out of convenience. If that kind of crap does it for you then go do it I have no value or room in my life for such a pointless nonsense.

Social networking needs to change social attitudes? If you can't stop people from posting things like cross dressing/racism/recreational drug use/vulgarity/people being etc - Then just accept it. Since when should it be legal for to anything (country, school, employer) to care what you put on Facebook? We have freedom of speech? We have freedom of expression? Anything that will willingly use what you post on Facebook against you are in effect telling you what to say, no? What is normal?
You have no right to privacy on the internet. Period. Anything you post is open game for employers, neighbors, marketers, parents and the general worldwide web. Free speech doesnt mean free from consequences. Facebook, like this forum, is privately owned. The owner makes the rules.
So an organisation that catches you posting something it doesn't agree with on Facebook for reputation reasons for example and wishes to cut you for what you do in personal life? Personal isn't always private, personal is you as a person. I'm not saying hide, I'm saying identify prejudiced acceptability in the non professional environment and judge any consequences to be a offence like unfair dismissal to protect us from people who may look you up on Facebook to determine what we can and can't have. It's public knowledge, that's not the issue. It's when schools/employers/countries decide to effect your life by it, is when it becomes an issue.
If you can sue a company over unfair dismissal, you should be able to sue somebody for denying you anything over what you post on Facebook... Call it discrimination but not. cyber bullying but not. ... it's using the internet to discriminate against someone on the personal level. ... it's using the internet to deny professional/academic opportunities - should be a recognised form of cyber bullying or abuse.

I recetly "deleted" my Facebook account and the three months that I have now been "sober", I have noticed I spent more time being productive and I actually even feel a lot better too.
