A FedEx contract driver in Texas was arrested Friday and charged in the kidnapping and murder of a 7-year-old girl who went missing two days earlier, officials said.

The disappearance of Athena Strand, who vanished Wednesday from her home in Paradise in Wise County, prompted a large search with around 200 volunteers from the community.

On Friday, authorities found her body southeast of the city of Boyd, a city about 11 miles away, Wise County Sheriff Lane Akin told reporters.

“We do have a confession,” Akin said at a news conference Friday night.

The driver, Tanner Lynn Horner, 31, was arrested on charges of capital murder and aggravated kidnapping, Akin said.

Other articles say that he didn't even know this girl. Sick.

    Death penalty?

Prison will sort this out nicely for us, on this I am certain. I look forward to reading about how he was dealt with.

Mentally ill doesn't cut it, the insanity defense is not that easy... but you're right, they may try, I do not think a jury will buy it though

The kidnapper ought to serve life or be executed. There must have been some reason for this.

Death penalty's not enough. Turn him loose and let her family handle it.

someone on that page said possible hit and run, I guess it could be, the police did say she died within an hour of the abduction they believe

sure the police will be able to tell what her injuries are from and know if that is true or not

I could see that as a possibility, especially with no priors. Since everyone's speculating, I think I can weave a tragic tale. The prep's drinking and driving, barely notices a little girl and tries to beep but it's too late as the truck rams head first into the girl. Not knowing what to do and traumatized by her death, he takes what is now effectively a corpse and flees with it as the adrenaline wears down and he accepts the consequences of what he's done and he's turned himself in.

As for why he decided on that course of action after ramming her with the vehicle? Maybe he thought it better than letting her cold body lie on the street/pavement. I don't know how close or far from the truth that ends up being, but it'd make 'sense' of the tragedy.

agree it would make more sense, still tragic either way, but that would make more sense, then again, sometimes these things make no sense

he may have planned to take her to a hospital, she died shortly after getting her into the vehicle, then he panicked and disposed of the body, tried to pretend it did not happen in his mind, who knows

the alternative is much uglier, of course

It's funny how we don't see the vitriol from the rightwing outrage committee as we do with other crimes.

    Why is that?

People have already called for the death penalty. Why are you making this a left/right issue.

Death penalty is far more humane than he deserves.

A FedEx driver admitted to strangling 7-year-old Athena Strand after he says he accidentally hit her with his van, according to an arrest warrant.

Tanner Lynn Horner, 31, claims Athena was awake and talking after he accidentally backed into her while delivering Christmas presents to her North Texas home last week, investigators say in the document.

The driver claimed he became worried about how Athena’s father would react, so he put her in his van and attempted to break her neck, the warrant states.

When that didn’t work, Horner said he decided to strangle her instead, according to the warrant. He later brought authorities to her body

The Wise County Sheriff and the DA are looking into the DP. The key determination is whether or not they can get a 1st-degree capital murder conviction with aggravating factors involved. This has made the local news on several nights including the vigil and continuing community support for the family.

Based on the affidavit of this felony murder charge, and the statements by the mother of the victim, said that he helped deliver her Christmas present. And according to his confession, the girl said "I am going to gell my daddy what you did" and that is when he killed her.

Personally, I think he should get the DP, but not sure if it meets Texas legal requirements.
