While we only got about an inch or two of snow – not like the North-East – it is still very cold – below zero counting the wind chill. All day I have been putting out more than the usual bird seed – a mixture of regular bird seed, safflower seed, black-oil sunflower seed, thistle seed, peanut splits, meal worms, chopped suet & raisins. I put out the mixture because we get various sizes and types of birds. I keep the yard about 1/3 undeveloped, both for the birds and for the animals who, thanks to developments have less habitat than before (and, as an added attraction, it doesn’t have to be mowed).

Today, I’ve seen chickadees, tufted titmouse, slate colored juncos, blue jays, cardinals, downy woodpeckers, starlings, grackles, brown headed cowbirds, red-winged blackbirds, white-throated sparrows, mourning doves, and house sparrows and probably a few other types I’m not going to bother trying to remember.

I won’t say they are hungry but as I was pouring bird seed into a feeder from one side, a chickadee landed on the other side and took a seed. While all that seed does cost $$, I think feeding them is the right thing to do and, besides, they’re fun to watch. On days like this, if they run short of seed, I’ve known them to perch on the landing rail and look in the window to remind me. All this is not that expensive and takes little effort although in weather like this, since I am on oxygen, I have to horse an oxygen tank around when outside and spend a few minutes catching my breath when I get back in. For most of the day, all I have to do is toss seed off the landing and enjoy the show.
