    Quite a scandal brewing here. Just imagine how conservatives would react if Obama had fired IGs investigating his cabinet members. But I'm sure Trumpers will respond with the usual dumb ****. "HUR DUR the prezident can fyre anyone he wantz." I disagree that he has the authority here. But that's beside the point. Let's save the authority discussion for another thread. This thread is about the political consequences of such action. It sure does look like a cover-up when the president fires an IG out of the blue, and that IG just happened to be investigating his Secretary of State.

    The political consequences will be between nothing and almost nothing. Trump will either pull the country out of a headlong dissent into epidemiological and economic catastrophe (Or luck into it by some extraordinarily unlikely set of circumstances) or he will lose reelection in crushing fashion. At the end of the day, the politically active people who care about this kind of thing already have very strong feelings about Trump. The people who hate him will oppose this action, while his supporters wouldn't care if he sent every single governmental watchdog out onto the White House lawn and shot them on live television. However, people who are less politically oriented and only engage when an election rolls around don't care about this kind of thing. However, they definitely do care about hundreds of thousands of deaths and mass unemployment.

    Hard to push the authority decision since it really is a key part of the question. There have to be LEGITIMATE STATED reasons to fire these people... It's in the law authorizing the presence of IGs to begin with.

    Atkinson was fired because he passed on the report of Presidential extortion. This guy is fired because Pompeo is a shitty boss?? That's the entire spectrum of bad behavior, huh.

    Grassley raised his partisan head and demanded explanation for Atkinson, but obviously never followed through. I doubt he'll even try more hypocrisy here...

    I'd have thought that both sides of the political divide would be concerned about so many IGs being fired. We should want to know the reasons for this. And if we don't care, what is the purpose of an IG?
