There has been several plans put forth about sending a manned mission to Mars and even colonizing it. Is the first nation to colonize Mars going to be able to lay claim to the whole planet and all its possible resources. Mars is about half the size of Earth , but contains about the same land mass. So the possible value of the planet is beyond calculation. I understand we are many years from scurrying back and forth to Mars, .but it will eventually happen There may be international agreements concerning space exploration , But I have done no research in this area. What are your thoughts and opinions.

There's no way a country could claim the entire planet simply by slapping a flag down.

I would love to see us fund this, for different reasons, however the international community would never stand for the notion of a country claiming an entire planet.

Do you know if this has ever been addressed. Didn't early explorers such as Columbus claim the land they discovered for their country of origin. on a lighter not about your scale it reminded me of an old Chris Rock joke : When it comes to crime am Conservative, but when it comes to prostitution am Liberal.

I don't think any international agreement has been worked out on the subject yet. I am sure they will come up with some sort of equation such as point of landing plus a radius of X kilometers belongs to the landing party. What will make it even more interesting is I think it is very possible the first people who land their will be privately funded rather than government funded. Will the company that pulls that off be able to claim it as sovereign land?

We have already been to the moon and didn't claim it, so I see Mars no different.

Hmm, I read somewhere that any crews going to Mars won't be coming back. Where you going to get a sane crew to do that?

Visiting and colonizing are two different things. On your other point there have been thousands of people volunteering to go and not just kooks.

Neither Exxon Microsoft or IBM own controlling interest in everything... Why the hell is it that people think government would be saintly if it weren't for corporations?

I see no problems with assigning 'free planet' status to Mars in the same way that Antarctica is. Nobody owns any of it, and the Antarctic Treaty contains caveats and restrictions on its use and exploitation.

Yeah, I had forgotten about the Antarctic. That could be a solution.

No country will have enough dough to colonize it on their own. So whoever pays for it and gets there first should own whatever land they can claim.

"The United Nations sponsored 1967 "Outer Space Treaty" established all of outer space as an international commons by describing it as the "province of all mankind" and forbidding states from claiming territorial sovereignty.[2] Article VI vests the responsibility for activities in space to States Parties, regardless of whether they are carried out by governments or non-governmental entities. The Outer Space Treaty of 1967 has currently been ratified by 102 countries,[3] including all the major space-faring nations. It has also been signed by 26 other nations but not yet ratified."

No state or country can simply "Claim" anything in space legally....unless they put it there.

Oh, by the way, didn't you already claim in another thread that Mars is populated by, er, Martians? So where does this 'ownership' come into the discussion?

"UUUUUUU" I see all the nations shaking in their boots….The United Nations ruling on the matter…..

what a joke….Bush called them out on those rules and did exactly what he wanted when he wanted cause he had the biggest army….

those with the biggest army and power will own the solar system…and who will that be…china…every country with an economy is now launching into space….

and those that own the planets will be even more powerful….

there was a reason a flag was planted on the moon…and we are reminded of it at every MTV music award…lol…

the USofA is falling behind in the race to be Numba One Killa …China is now a threat to the point the USofA cow tows to them daily….

don't kid yourselves the next real big land grab…is space….

anyone falling asleep at the wheel wil be left behind big time….

    the future is now

Just wondering,if we planted our flag on the moon to claim it....why do we allow others to invade our land?

Also, exactly what did Bush do to "Call them Out" on the outer space treaty?

Further, Do you believe that China is actually outpacing the U.S. in space exploration/exploitation in any way?

They're planning a manned Mars flight before us. We're planning to go back ? or for the first time in 2020.

a quick look at human history will show the difference between claiming land and holding it.
