"An aircraft cabin ban on large electronic devices was prompted by intelligence suggesting a terror threat to US-bound flights, says US media."

    http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-39348615

So essentially, what's the difference between this stricture, designed to protect American plane passengers from being blown to kingdom come by jihadists in the air, and the extra precautions which Mr Trump advocated to protect American citizens in shopping malls and sports arenas from the same fate? Anyone? [IMG]

I don't know how putting laptops in the cargo hole makes anyone safer. But, there have been other incidents of devices being rigged with explosives coming out of Yemen.

    The cargo hold isn't pressurised.

Would not allow access to a manual trigger.

Would that make a difference if there was some other sort of trigger?

Maybe, if you can't get to it, if it is not powered up. We also don't know what the exact danger uncovered was.

Well, I'm certainly in the dark on this one.. But, bombs on planes have come out of Yemen before.

Meanwhile, in today's news Iran is ramping up their support of the al Houthis.

Might not have been a bomb, could be hacking into the plane and causing a problem.

The ban of laptops in Airliners cabins is a reasoned smart step of reaction on tangible threat found and how to eliminate it and ordered by the Anti-terror Specialists of the US services..
The so called precautions which Mr. Trump advocated are a general political statement of intent to please his followers and the US citizens who feel in danger, without concrete measures how to protect. .

    liberal kumbaya moment ahead
The ban was put in place so people would put their devices away and get to know each other that we may all get along

The cargo hold is pressurized even though it has no passengers because you cannot have the cargo bay unpressurized while the cabin above is pressurized. The pressure differential, which could amount to 2 pounds/sq. in. or 14 kilopascals at an altitude of 29000 ft. , would cause the cabin floor to simply collapse taking the control cables with it and resulting, most probably, in a hull loss. This is why there are blow-out panels between the cabin and cargo-bays, so that the floor doesn't collapse in case there is an explosive decompression and a pressure differential situation occurs.

Yemen has made other attempts to pub explosive devices on airplanes headed for the US. Thanks to Saudi intelligence they failed.

It's a good thing we have the travel ban in place to keep us while they sort these messes out.

of course poking a large battery could be dangerous too, so possible they heard of a potential threat

they need to hurry up and get the new batteries as standard that do not explode

IEDs are typically triggered remotely. Using a cellphone as the trigger is a popular method. You wouldn't even have to be in the same country as we have seen with US drone strikes operated from the Pentagon.

A laptop can be used to access the controls of a plane. Some Jihadi finally watched one of the black/grey hat conventions and figured out, "Wait... I don't need a bomb!"

With a raspberry pi you can setup a station to monitor the flight data of all planes within a 40 mile radius.

There's all kinds of things you can do with micro's like the Pi series, let alone an actual PC.

You can do all those things using a mobile phone.

This new rule seems to not understand that mobile phones also have batteries and it's the batteries in laptops is the reason given for banning laptops in cabins. This new rule is just to please the public

I hope they are also demanding that the battery in these laptops be removed from the computer. This would make inspection easier and remote detonation harder.

Many electronic gadgets have batteries that cannot be removed. This new rule is pointless made just to make passengers feel safer.
