Florida armed bystander stops gunman at crowded back-to-school event at park

An armed bystander shot a man who opened fire at a Florida park filled with over 100 people -- including children -- for a Saturday back-to-school cookout, officials said.

The Titusville Police Department said in a news release the man was involved in a fistfight with another person at the Issac Campbell Park and left around 5:20 p.m. -- only to return with a gun minutes later and start shooting.

A bystander, who was lawfully licensed to carry a firearm, then shot the gunman.

“We are extremely grateful that nobody else was injured in this incident,” Deputy Chief Todd Hutchinson said in a statement. “This suspect opened fire at a crowded public park. This could have been so much worse.”

The gunman, whose firearm was recovered at the scene, was airlifted to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries. No one else was injured during the shootout.

A DJ whose family organized the event at the park told Florida Today he was standing under a pavilion when he heard at least a dozen shots ring out.

Dwight Harvey was streaming the event live on his Facebook page when the shooting started. Children and parents could be seen in the video going through supplies when the shots suddenly rang out, WFTV reported.

Make sure you watch the video

Good Guy, with a concealed carry firearm, stops gunman at a crowded public park.

If the park was a gun free zone, like a school, this hero wouldnt have been able to save so many.

    What do you think?

Nobody would have been shooting anybody if nobody had a gun.

And if gun ownership was made illegal, which of the two men do you think would have been more likely to have a gun anyhow?

Once again, Hogg, and most 'anti gun' people do not advocate forbidding people from owning guns.
Let's not pretend however that the incredible prevalance of guns in the US is not the reason that there are so many gun deaths in the US. I feel very very very confident that the odds of an altercation in France, where I currently reside, is not going to lead to a guy coming back to the scene with a gun. Stuff happens, so you can never be sure, but I know that statistically my odds of being killed by a gun are much smaller in France than in the US.

You mean the homicide rate that started trending downward in 1989?

Besides, clearly selling more firearms reduces the homicide rate, to use your charts against your ridiculous argument.

    1) your graph proves that the gun buyback didn't impact the already downward trend that was happening prior to the gun buyback.

    2) I didn't ask about crime rates. I asked "How are you going to get rid of ALL guns???"

Is it? Here you are like.. it can't be done / how can this be done.
When it has been done before.

And coincidentally... it does show the world becomes safer.
Downward trend or not. It is as it is.

Clearly this shows that the more guns people have the less guns are used in murder.

Except that the chart is a fraud. Guns per person is caculated by dividing the number of guns by the population. Doesn't take into account the actual fact that the percentage of people owning guns is actually decreasing while the number of guns owned by people who own guns is increasing.

What an honest chart would show is that decreasing gun ownership is decreasing gun homicides.

    How?

Well clearly we don't lower homicides by disarming the victims.

Gun control is like having the sheep demand the shepherds disarm to protect them from the wolves.

If someone put a gun in your hand, would you be more, less, or equally likely to rape, rob or murder someone?

If you said more, less, or equally, the gun is not the problem.

    Ok, here's another one.

Clearly the more guns we have, the less crime we have.

    More guns.

    Less homicide.
