I think the Forum name should change to better reflect current needs.

    From Gay & Lesbian Rights
    to LGBT Issues.

Rights are only a part of LGBT discussions and many topics are better covered by the new name.

I agree!! What you suggest is superior to the current title.

Actually the whole movement needs to change its name. The LGBT+alphabet soup bit is getting old. Every time some sub-set of the LGBT community feels the need to express itself...you get another letter tacked onto it. Eventually LGBT is going to be thought in the same light as that one CarMax commercial where they take the phrase "We'll buy your car even if you don't buy ours" and turn it into the ridiculous acronym of "WBYCEIYDBO".

They need to simplify the name so it's all inclusive, covers everything, and does so without having to add letters. One that I've heard suggested was "SAGA" which stands for "Sexuality And Gender Awareness -or- Acceptance"

I kinda like that one. It covers sexuality, it covers gender and regardless of what you identify as in either category...you're covered.

Well, I know what you mean. But you don't just change something like that, it evolves and changes over time.

No, transsexual rights are not the same issues as gay rights.

While that may be a correct statement, the fact remains that they refer to themselves as part of the LGBT Movement and the LGBT Community. LGBT standing for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender. And the list gets sillier from there every time they want to add someone/thing else to the mix. Like for example you have Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transexual, queer/questioning, asexual/allies, intersexual, pansexual, straight or LGBTQAIPS.

The list gets pretty silly after a while. Hence why I like SAGA.

And while Transgendered rights are a different fight than Gay rights, it doesn't mean that a unified community can't be the people standing behind the transgendered and lending their support.

"LGBT" is a fairly clear/meaningful thing at this point. Some probably are 'unclear' what it means in their own mind... but most of people who are paying attention understand what the acronym and certain variations of it stand for. Even so, the term will evolve over time if it must.

It won't simply be 'switched' right away; don't expect that.

I have one very good question I would like answered,
Why is Improved or better coverage of LGBT matters a bad thing ???

I have always noticed, if you dislike coffee, and do not drink it, you likely will make lousy coffee not great coffee.

    It is the same here.

How about this, I really like the unified alliance concept.

    And it represents everyone's interests.

    LGA

    Lesbian Gay Alliance

I got to ask a dumb question. How are Transgendered rights a different fight than Gay rights? I mean whether your Bill playing with Bobs baseball bat or Crissy playing with Cindys catchers mitt your still technically one gender playing with the other genders fun toys. So what it's different because someone decides to take hormone shots to grow boobs and possibly chop Willy the Winkle off or vice versa? Because I mean unless you were naturally born transgendered which has been known to happen people being born with both sexes then I don't really see a difference unless it's in that type of a case. I just don't get it. Maybe I am to old to get it. o_O

Better than an acronym that is evolving out of control like Tetsuo did at the end of Akira.

File this under "Because it matters how you talk to us...": It's transgender (an adjective), not transgendered (a past participle of a verb, used as an adjective, which would only be appropriate if it were possible to take the action of transgendering someone, such that they became transgendered as a result.)

To understand all of this, you have to first be open to concepts that may differ from what you think you already know:

Sex/Gender is a designation assigned at birth, usually based on a doctor's relatively superficial observation of a newborn's genitalia, without knowing whether a person's genetic makeup aligns with their appearance. Most people fit into the concept of sex/gender as strictly binary, and the stigma associated with not fitting into those boxes is considerable.

People whose physical makeup doesn't fit this conceptual binary are sometimes called intersex, but it should be noted that this term covers a wide range of situations. People who are intersex generally are not "born with both sexes"; It's more often the case that the development of their sexual organs (external and/or internal) is atypical despite otherwise having either "XX" or "XY" "sex chromosomes" (though there are other situations, such as an extra or a missing chromosome); While there are people who possess both "XY" and "XX" "sex chromosomes", it's an exceedingly rare intersex situation. People born into an intersex situation are not "born transgendered", either. Intersex relates to sex/gender; transgender relates to gender identity (see further below). That said, there are people in intersex situations whose gender identity doesn't align with the sex they were assigned at birth; the two things can overlap.

Many people don't even know they're intersex until some other issues arises, such as failing to undergo the physical changes associated with puberty; appearing female but masculinizing as a result of puberty; issues of infertility; a medical crisis that results in the revelation of an intersex situation; etc.

Gender Identity is how a person sees themselves. Most people have a gender identity that aligns with the sex/gender they were assigned at birth; The term for that would be cisgender. Due to the alignment of their sex/gender & gender identity, and the lack of any stigma attached to their situation, cisgender people are often not aware of any difference/separation between their gender identity and the sex/gender they were assigned at birth. Transgender is the term for someone whose gender identity doesn't align with the sex/gender they were assigned at birth.

Transgender is about identity; it is not universally a matter of taking hormones or having sex confirmation surgery; those are decisions best made between the person affected and their doctor. Whether or not someone is taking hormones or altering their appearance via surgery is no one else' business at all; curiosity does not entitle you to that information about another person.

Gay/Bisexual/Lesbian are all terms that reference attraction. The orientation of one's feelings of attraction is separate from one's gender identity.

The social and legal issues connected with being gay, bisexual, lesbian, and/or intersex, and or/transgender are not completely the same for each group. As often as we might say 'love is love', and 'hate is hate', the problems associated with the latter don't necessarily manifest in the same way for each group.

Lastly, 'LGBT' isn't about what you want to call people. It's about how each individual identifies themselves. You can choose to be respectful of how they label themselves, or not - that's up to you. But I disagree with the notion that anyone is "too old" to "get it". "Getting it" is completely a matter of whether or not your mind is sufficiently open to concepts and viewpoints that differ from your own, personal experience.

If people know what something means (like "Prince" or "The Artist's" symbol... for example), that's all that really matters ultimately.

Those people who are sexually different, need and deserve protection in this world... just as others who are somewhat different also do. And because their struggles to be treated well and to acquire equal treatment (under the law) are quite real... they will do better grouped as a coalition.

I'd say that "LGBT" is fine, and the related terminology will evolve eventually (over time).

T and B should not be grouped with GL. It is an different set of issues. Actually, it should be H(hetero)GL, since all 3 are inherently sex bias. Bs are not. Ts are whatever each says.
