    snip

Hundreds of media industry staffers were laid off this week during a brutal period that saw Warner Bros. Discovery, Gannett and others slash headcount as economic uncertainty plagues news organizations.

Gannett, a newspaper juggernaut that owns dozens of local media outlets along with USA Today, began its latest round of layoffs on Thursday. The cost-cutting effort impacted roughly 6% of the company’s news workforce of about 3,440 employees.

    end snip

the article continues detailing layoffs. I do not like to see anyone lose their situation especially during the Christmas season. There is irony to this given that most of the media push the Democrat talking points and it's Democrat policies that have killed this economy and as a consequence; their jobs.

not enough demand for US based coders to cover the layoffs that have been happening. One thing that Covid lockdowns taught us is that you don't need local people to develop software. Being in a cubicle isn't any better than being remote, thousands of miles away

Those who refused to come in the office and said I can work from anywhere. Well, employers also said well, we can hire people from anywhere, even across the globe for half the cost.

it's not just because of "those who refused"

Many professional roles can be performed remotely and yes, that includes across the globe. That is what the Internet has made possible. Firms also benefit from reduced costs of housing employees. Greenies should love less folks commuting. And yes, positions can be filled using talent that is less expensive

Back on topic, these positions are not being filled by remote workers. The positions no longer exist mostly in part due to the train wreck of an economy exacerbated by harmful, Democrat policies

Newspaper business has been dying for years. Online presence has mitigated it a little, but they have had prior cuts

This one, at least, is more about the modern world, than Biden's incompetence.

I'd contend it's at least as much about the news industry's general incompetence and untrustworthiness than it is about the more general "modern world".

Agreed, but the modern world also gives us so many more news sources than what I had growing up in the 70s/early 80s that allows us to see the issues that you referenced

We had the 3 networks and the local papers - that was about it

I think in this case the industry is losing its ass purely because it lost consumer trust. I don't know how often one has to lie to no longer be believed, but I know most media outlets have lied more times than that.

People with even the most basic of understanding and independent thought are starting to see that the media is controlled by billionaires and push their own agenda to manipulate the masses.

As this happens these organizations will contract.

Anyone notice how FOX keeps record numbers while those same viewers scream the MSM has brainwashed everyone.

    Ironic.

I always thought the US missed a huge oppertunity to open more tech schools that teach real world skills, like IT networking, programming, etc as opposed to kids just attending college. As an IT Director or CTO, I would value students that get an MCSE/MCITP and a CCNA/CCNP over a 4 year degree. You learn more in those courses than you do in Philosophy or Middle Eastern Studies.

As an Aviator, Embry Riddle was always the school of choice. For a good reason.

nah, then we at least have gridlock and the House can reject harmful, Democrat policies but, they cannot rescind the harm that was passed under FULL DEMOCRAT CONTROL

    nice try though

Print newspapers are on their way out. It’s just a matter of time. As for CNN, they were once part of the Democratic propaganda wing, recently they are trying to go to straight news without a political slant or bias. But those CNN viewers who want their news with a liberal slant are moving to MSNBC, another Democratic Party propaganda wing. CNN cutting staff isn’t surprising as people for the most part, political partisans want their news with the proper political bias slant toward their ideology. Conservatives have Fox News as their propaganda wing.

I think the bottom line is few folks are interested in getting the news in a full, accurate and fair manner without the political bias or ideological slant they believe in and adhere to. Which I think CNN is finding out.

just so we are clear, it's a Democrat slant. The term democratic is for a process. The Democrat party is the term for the elite, statist party.

If you haven’t been checking, there is a provision within the current defense spending bill to “bail out” the news industry that is failing because they don’t want to report news, but rather discuss narrative all day.

Democrats are great at bailing out their failures be it student loan forgiveness or multinational media conglomerates that are bleeding money for insulting their audiences.

I think Fox has higher rating because intelligent leftist tune in as you touch on, because they find some diversity on rightwing media where there is never apposing views on the DNC controlled MSNBCNN overlord networks..

    How it started.

'During a rally yesterday, Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden spoke to a crowd in Derry, N.H., a town that many miners call home. He acknowledged the economic setbacks and job insecurity that coal miners face these days, and gave them some advice: learn to code.'

Biden said, “Anybody who can go down 3,000 feet in a mine can sure as hell learn to program as well… Anybody who can throw coal into a furnace can learn how to program, for God’s sake!”

'The comment was met with silence from the audience.'

“Biden tells coal miners to ‘learn to code,'” The Hill, December 31st, 2019.

'How it’s going: Expect coding class enrollment surge following WaPo publisher’s announcement that layoffs are coming.'

Learn to code, fake news bitches!

'None of these people give a single **** that their preferred policies result in countless jobs lost in the oil and coal industries.'

'The Washington Post, which has lost 500k subscribers in the past year, has announced layoffs are coming to the paper. The meeting didn’t go well.'
