Gay rights only matter if you are liberal?

That's exactly right. I don't understand why people get upset about your beliefs, and similar beliefs of others.

I am not sure that is fair. I am about as liberal as they get. Yet I don't wish ill will on anyone...okay most anyone (we're going for honesty here). I know plenty of "conservative" LGBT people. While some of their beliefs make me shake my head, I would never hope to silence them. I don't endorse anyone who preaches hate, regardless of where they fall on the political spectrum. That is just as easily someone from the left as it is the right.

We are now in genuine danger of this happening. Canada and parts of Europe are leading the way.

Here's the thing .. you will see it in media and the arts, sure. And in public high school course material. But you don't have to address it in the home. It's actually very easy to ignore it as not relevant to you and yours, just as it's very easy to mark other 'lifestyles' as not relevant to you and yours. You don't necessarily feel any compulsion to sit your kids down and discuss the ins and outs of working on an oil rig, or how it feels to have red hair (if your kids' isn't red), or what lizards think about tarmac. Actually scrub that last, you might actually have that conversation ... I did. Anyway, just leave it out of your ongoing family dialogue. It's not relevant (to 99% of us), and drawing attention to it via making special note - for or against - will only reinforce the idea that it should be relevant. Don't monster the gays, or laud the gays - just don't mention them at all. We all make choices about what will occupy our thoughts and our time. We automatically edit out the stuff we don't need/want, when exposed to media etc. EG, I don't care for fight scenes (in movies), or 'the news', so whenever these things are appear on a screen in my presence, I change channel, close my eyes, or fast forward. Easy.

I accept that considering opposing viewpoints/rights is generally good. However, if/when one set of of the same calls for or fosters the oppression of either side... that is not worth considering, except to oppose it.

If we zoom out a bit, we can see that homosexuals/gays have been treated badly over time, for no good reason. I can agree that there are opposing viewpoints... but some people primarily seek to 'inconvenience' or 'harm' (in whatever ways possible) those different from themselves. There is no reason to abide with that.
