Well, you can't expect the capitalist media to put much effort into reporting on the imminent implosion of capitalism, can you?

Exactly, the form of Capitalism that is now strangling most of us is a cul de sac, a dead end.

Well, Southern Europe did forgive (correct term?) Germany's debt more than once. Last time was around 2003 or 2004 when Germany couldn't get her deficit straight.

Capitalism reforms itself, so it's here to stay.

I saw a huge article on the protests in today's Wall Street Journal. Evidently, this is news and you're still people....

This is a surprise to you?

Notice how at one time, Iceland were all over our media.

And then...for some reason...the media STOPPED covering them.

    I wonder why....

    Nope.

That was not the reason the MSM stopped covering Iceland.

National press tend to be navel gazing. The strikes have made the news here but the front pages are dominated by domestic concerns. To some extent it is consequence of our own innate insularity their are very few internationalists.

I know, the thought of such a thing happening all over is too too scarry for them. I don't have MSM and I think Europeans were more aware of what was happening than Americans ................but yup a 'bad example' is not going to be broadcast too loudly when it works.

I think they tend to ignore that which will not sell newspapers. Most media is for profit, they will only write about that which will sell.

And old news (ex., 'austerity' protests) doesn't sell too well...

Actually, this reminds me, would appreciate your feedback here.

Do you consider the media, press and television, to be disproportionately misanthropic, in it's balance of stoies?

For sure, all across the world, there are indeed injustices, and terrible things, and these fully merit being given exposure, of course they do.

But life is not ALL black, is it?

    Of course not.

And before anyone says that 'it is because we like bad news', I beg to differ, I think that is a mantra we take on, without thinking it through.

    Think of yourself.

Do you prefer it when a friend tells you good news, or terrible news?

    You prefer the former, right?

Proof that we are not hard wired to somehow wanting all our news to be one long story of doom and gloom.

Again, not saying we need more gloss over things, heavens no, perhaps just more balance.

There is lots of good news stories out there, fantastic stories, and I think they merit coverage, as policy, and fair air time.

I think people would find them informative, inspiring, and uplifting.

By all means, keep us informed of the dark side of human nature, but do not make the news a mere vehicle for ONLY the dark side.

Don't reduce any positive news stories to some footnote, done in a patronising manner.

    Disproportionally negative perhaps.

I think a lot of it has to do with the media's predilection for sensationalism and titillation, and good news just doesn't fit the bill.

I know what you're saying, Jack, and it sucks. William Faulkner obliquely touched on this in his Nobel prize address, and I'm going to post the whole thing because it's worth reading - pay particular attention to the final paragraph:

I don't know why this ethos should or needs to be confined to artists, but as ryan pointed out, media outlets are businesses, not artists.
