I was in Berlin when the wall came down and was told that they got the dumbest people they could find to shoot their fellow Germans when anyone tried to escape. Many from the west were shaking hands with these illiterate thugs to show their friendship of East meets West but I never did, and never would. Their atrocities didn't end with WWII.

I had similar thoughts. West Germany bent over backwards, to make amendments for what had happened during the 3rd Reich.
Because of it, it was accepted back into the community of nations, free nations. The East never did and created the follow up criminal state.
Upon reunification they were given the same status West Germans had fought for. None of their political criminals was prosecuted, none of their criminal system was displayed and prosecuted.
A very good friend of mine spent 7 years in solitary, his wife and children to, because they were caught trying to flee. Separated for 7 years without being able to communicate. They were bought free. First time they saw each other was when they were loaded on the busses. They did not dare to make eye contact. Neither with their children, nor with each other. Nobody of that criminal state was made responsible.
They had it to easy and it shows, like our Neo Nazi kiddo.

 

It was much like the Nazi leaders whose friends helped them escape after WWII. And of course there has always been more Communist sympathizers than Nazi sympathizers, to make it easier, and still are.

NATO is Cold War inertia. Germany and, to a lesser extent, Turkey are starting to view the United States as more of a threat than Russia, and they're right. Russia can definitely overrun the Baltic States, and could plausibly overrun most of Poland before the Americans could muster a defense. I'm not saying this is going to happen, I don't think it will, I'm saying that Russia does pose a significant threat to Central Europe.

All this back and forth doesnt change a basic fact, neither your hate for Germany nor my anti americanism. That this leads to nothing.

Trump wants that Germany builds up a stronger military and invest more in its defense. Thats understandable. But his methods lead to nothing.

Germany is a souvereign nation. A democracy with elected officials, representing the will of the people.

By throwing empty threats, insults and showing unfriendly behavior, Trump gets the direct oppossite of what he wants. No german representative with a spine could step infront his voters and tell them he does as a foreign leader orders him to do. If trump wants decide over Germany, he has to change the american constitution and give Germans voting rights in USA. When he is my leader, he can order.

That s the direct reason, why Germany jokes about him and his vasalls like Grenell and their empty threats. Same counts about Nordstream II pipeline. No foreign power decides our energy politics.

Trump recently went mad when France said they could negotiate between Iran and USA. Trump said nobody decides or speaks for USA. Same counts for all others. We decide our fate, no foreign leader who would love to be a tyrant over people who did not vote for him, nor could vote for him.

I admit that on our side there are also representatives who act wrong. Laughing about USA or Trump is not better either. They should follow Merkel who simply ignores the white house and deals with governors ect on the USA side.

On the basic line the relations between USA and Germany are ruined and i guess they wont be better any time soon.
