Apparantly we are considered most popular nation in the world. Looks like people love our "evilness"

    https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-22624104

Germany is the most positively viewed nation in the world in this year's annual Country Ratings Poll for the BBC World Service.

Germany replaces US as country with best international image
Germany enjoys the best reputation of any country in the world, according to the latest Nation Brands Index. The survey found that there is much more than Germany's economic motor driving the positive image.

Member countries make direct and indirect contributions to the costs of running NATO and implementing its policies and activities.

    • Indirect – or national – contributions are the largest and come, for instance, when a member volunteers equipment or troops to a military operation and bears the costs of the decision to do so.
    • Direct contributions are made to finance requirements of the Alliance that serve the interests of all 29 members - and are not the responsibility of any single member - such as NATO-wide air defence or command and control systems. Costs are borne collectively, often using the principle of common funding.
    • Within the principle of common funding, all 29 members contribute according to an agreed cost-share formula, based on Gross National Income, which represents a small percentage of each member’s defence budget.

The key word here is "image." Thankfully the UN doesn't allow Germany to have a military capable of offensive invasions of countries. No one should forget Germany's history of either helping to start or starting world wars.

Show me where the UN says anything about German military. :)

During cold war we spend 4% of GDP in our military, Now its 1.25%. Trump wants us to spend 2% on our military

This doesn't seem to jive with your assertion that Germany has "existed for thousands of years."

C'mon Sobo, either Austria is Germany or Germany didn't exist until the middle of the 19th Century.

    You're a big eat-your-cake-and-have-it kinda guy.

In a way the kiddo is right, Germany did not exist at that time, it was the Empire :D

No, you missed my point. Sobo used "Germany" writ-large when convenient, and "Germany" in a more narrow sense when convenient. He does the same thing on nearly every matter. He is at times extremely pro-EU and at others extremely anti-EU, he is at times extremely pro-Russian and at others extremely anti-Russian. At times he lambasts the German establishment for it's refusal to build a military and at other times paints the lack of a military as a realpolitik move.

Sobo does not have theories, he has a single belief: Germany always has been, is, and always will be superior in every way. He will take contradictory paths to reach this belief.

I meant it as a joke. The Neo Nazi kiddo has some really seriously strange idea and theories about Germans and Germany.
None of them can be taken seriously, except the party which furthers those ideas. The kiddo is a joke, but the people behind that joke are not a joke.
Luckily they are just a minority and hopefully will never be more.
Most Germans are not truly anit American. The sentiments change from administration to administration. Currently the dislike is based on one person, Trump. During Obama the US was seen rather favorable, despite the drone war from Ramstein and despite his demands that Germany should increase its defense budget, despite criticizing the trade surplus and so on and son. Bush was very unpopular.
It always depends how things are done
Overall, Germany is very hesitant to take a major role on the world stage and I think that is very good. It is used to do politics on international level behind closed doors or through the back door. I like that. No macho crap, no posturing, no who is the best, or the greatest, which the kiddo so badly needs
If you are good you are good and everybody knows it, you do not have to let it hang out, no need for it.
Most people in Germany understand, that the military has been grossly neglected and needs some serious fixing and fast. But most people understand if Germany would have 300,000 soldiers and 1,000 tanks and what ever else, like during the cold war, its neighbors would feel uncomfortable. Being the economic powerhouse in central Europe and than on top of it a military powerhouse.
That would create a imbalance in Europe, a very dangerous one.
Yes Germany needs a solid Army, which 1.5% would provide and Germany should be the core of joint units and increase the joint units with Poland, Hungry, France, Netherlands Belgium and all the Baltic States.

No, you must be confused. The National Socialist German Workers' Party is closer to AOC's socialist Squad, with their anti-semitism, than it is to Trump.

Well that's the crazy thing, I don't think he's even a neo-Nazi. That would demand some kind of consistency.

He is, but he does not have the knowledge or education to have a consistent position. All he has is the race thing and Germany first, the greatest and all the other BS.
Yes he is a NAZI, by all means and he shows who they are, the followers.

Didn’t you just cheer 2 pages ago to free train rides? And weren’t you bragging about Germany being a welfare state in other threads? You are as much anti-socialist as Lenin was anti-communist.

    @Sobo
While you are salivating at the idea of a free train ride, your country’s economy is taking a dive.
Let’s watch this whale dive and let’s see how deep it goes!

Probably thousands have taken a symbolic piss in the Rhine and Germans, you claim, have taken it another step further.

You're right, and I doubt anyone cares. Germany hasn't had a coherent foreign policy for well over a century.
