We subsidize Boeing, so everyone does some subsidizing. How do I know? I worked for Northrop Corporation that has made the Boeing 747 fuselage section for almost fifty years.

You screwed a Canadian company who sold their jet series to Airbus. Now, you can't put a tariff on the plane and it will still pull 200 Delta Airline orders. Boeing, for their part, got the Brazil competitor to sell out to them.

Trust me (putting on my Canadian hat--I'm a dual USA/Canadian), Canada won't forget this bit of treachery. They're ready to kiss off NAFTA because Trump isn't satisfied with the U.S. having a trade SURPLUS with Canada (goods and services) and the Fat One (you know who I mean) lies to the American people when he only mentions a goods deficit with Canada. Well, duh--we sell them lots of high-value services, high-wage services. They supply us with lots of raw materials. We have a total trade SURPLUS when you count services.

We're stupid enough to kiss off a good deal with Canada? Why? Trump blows away a good deal, the elite complains, and then Trump says the elites are trying to screw the little guy. Maybe the elites are, but not on this issue. Trump is just using NAFTA to score points with gullible workers who believe the Fat One when he says he'll bring back low-skill, high-wage jobs. Well, they aren't ever coming back. High-skill jobs, yes--low-skill, high-wage jobs, never. Of course, the Fat One will try to blame the elites for stopping him from delivering on a promise he couldn't keep because those jobs are never coming back.

You want to strip Canadian content from cars--that is, kill parts and assembly in Canada? Canada will slap a nice fat duty on American cars and Ford, GM, and Chrysler will lose about 15% of their market--IOW, we won't be better off because those Canadian jobs will be lost. German, Korean, and European car manufacturers will love Trump.

GM, Ford, and Chrysler will be that much weaker.

Of course, we do. If we didn't, subsidized Airbus would eat Boeing's lunch. Canada was just playing the game.

How are we going to beat Canada if they have the second greatest supply of raw materials in the world and only 36m people?

If we screw up NAFTA and then screw up the prior free trade agreement with Canada that clicks in if NAFTA dies, Canada will just go its own way. If we want a deal with them after that to get access to the raw materials they'll have already promised to other countries to get trade deals with those nations, we'll have to give up way, way more at that point than we ever did to get a trade agreement with Canada in the first place.

Projections are than Canada will take a short-term, 1% hit to its GDP if they loose the trade deal with us. Our hit will be less than that, at least in the short-term.

It won't be long before we're going to need their water for the Midwest and West. Do you think they're going to make the sacrifices to their waterways, lakes, rivers, etc. to get us that water if we treat them like sh*t?

 

I don’t believe that Europe or the rest of the world that voted against us for that matter were telling us that we couldn’t put our embassy where we want. They were just letting us know what a moron Trump is for doing so.
