"Don't be scared," a man tells his transgender son in an emotional new Gillette ad. "Shaving is about being confident."
The ad, which has been viewed more than 700,000 times on Facebook since it was first shared on Thursday, purports to show Samson Bonkeabantu Brown's "first shave". The Toronto-based artist and activist is seen with a razor in his hand and shaving cream on his face as his father stands nearby, gently encouraging him.
"Ah, you’re doing fine," his dad says. "You are doing fine."
As Brown explains in the clip, his first shave marked a particularly meaningful milestone in his transition journey.
"Growing up, I was always trying to figure out what kind of man I wanted to become and I’m still trying to figure out what kind of man that I want to become," Brown says in the ad. "I always knew I was different. I didn’t know that there was a term for the type of person that I was."

I wonder how transgender people feel being treated like window dressing for a "woke" corporation advertisement campaign. If I was trans I would be insulted.

further... shaving isn't about being confident it is about removing hair. Bizarre adds like this perplex me. why does there need to be a philosophy behind razors? I buy bic razors. I have no idea what they think of trans people or black lives matter or whatever, and I don't care.

Do you believe ads featuring a white heterosexual couple should insult whites or heterosexuals?

Advertisements are designed to gain attention or target a base — seems to have achieved its goal.

As for trans people feeing insulted that a corporation included them in an ad, as a demographic that has frequently been ignored or ridiculed, I doubt very many of them are insulted.

that's not really the same thing is it? A company can't show how woke they are by having a heterosexual white couple in their add. Treating this person like they're an oddity the company needs patting on the back for bringing attention to is very different than showing an average run-of-the-mill couple.

I don't think that's what this advertisement is for. it's to stir up controversy to get the name Gillette mentioned as much as possible.

I would think being treated like a zoo animal would be insulting but I guess you don't see it that way. And just FYI is there not frequently ridiculed they're likely the most celebrated (if you can call it a) demographic there is. There are more advocates for trans people then there are people who are trans.

And if they're far from ignored it seems like every time I get on the internet someone is running their mouth about trans people.

Thanks for your woke post but I'm not impressed.

So it’s pandering if it features a minority?

    ie. Gain attention

They have a higher discrimination rate, a higher murder rate, and a lower acceptance rate than virtually all other minority groups. Where are you getting your info from?

The internet “runs its mouth” about just about everything. National ads are a different category.

Good, impressing you was the furtherest thing from my mind. Typical snarky comments.

not if they're going about normal daily life but if the ads about how trans they are yes

higher discrimination rate and I'll lower acceptance rate is bologna. People are tripping over themselves to accept them they're the most revered demographic.

yes ad agencies are behind the curve they react to social movements they don't start them. Which is why this sort of thing is so cringey.

If you didn't want to impress upon me some review you had why in the hell did you even respond to my post in the first place?

I don't see this ad as hurting anyone. But it might well help someone who is struggling.

Nope..most people don't rally care enough to complain or react. People also freaked a bit when Captain Kirk kissed a black woman.

And exactly what would be shocking to you?

At what point would an ad be taking things just a little too far?

This is supposed to be a special moment between father and son. You don't think this is obviously an attempt to twist around the culture?
I bet even the actor who played that dad in the ad thinks the whole thing was a little wacky, but hey, a paycheck is a paycheck.

My view is rather simple, actually.

If you need to shave your face, then do it. I don't care what you identify as, were born as, what pronoun you prefer, or what color you are. If you feel it needs to be shaved, then shave it.

What I don't understand, is why people feel the need to throw up a flag or banner, and proclaim what they are. If you are comfortable with who you are, you don't need 'acceptance' from anyone. You may like having a 'community' of people who can relate on levels other-than people can, but that doesn't need to be a fence you build.

They issue wasn't simply that he/she was shaving.

They were trying to turn a special moment between father & son in American culture into something else, as if that was perfectly natural. Trying to create a new normal for society. (When it's not such an obvious thing that pumping yourself full of male hormones so that you can start growing facial hair is such a good idea)

I know some women that could benefit from shaving their face, but I'll leave that alone.

I guess you could get wound up over something like that, if that is what matters to you. It doesn't have to taint your world, and while it's not something I plan on doing, I shrug and move on. To each, their very own.

Once again, Pop Culture uses Black people as their crash test dummy ... tsk tsk ... we all know that it is mainly non-Blacks sitting at the top of the transgender food chain. So it makes sense they are not the ones trotted out/put on display in tv ads, for conservatives and religions to scoff at or to validly-criticize.

This reminds me of how today all ABC/ESPN's and TNT's NBA game broadcasts come equipped with every other tv ad/tv commercial features a White man and his Black wife. Liberals have definitely switched into 6th gear with their social engineering efforts.

Thanks for creating this thread. This video is more evidence of what I always, mention, about the terrible future karma awaiting the USA for how we treat darkskin Black citizens.

Wow...you certainly have an issue with whitey and American progress. Just so you think a bit on this commentary...Racism goes both ways.

Yes, racism is heterosexual based and homosexual based.

Look at the transgenders folks benefitting the most/enjoying the most success. They are not Black.

    And, we both know why
    .

So I feel that that makes it, fair, to deem this Gillette ad as peculiar. Especially in light of the personal, private activity going on as the "plot" or theme of the video.

The words being spoken by the transgender in the vid would be far more, powerful, if they were being spoken by a White HISP/White Jew/White European transgender who are actually sitting atop the transgender food chain since Obama empowered them in 2012.

I feel so, so sorry for Black citizens.

    Truth, hurting?

Refusing to discuss it, only makes it worse on the day you're forced to discuss it ---because it hath landed upon your life. The choice is yours.

And no, the unfortunate facts of this matter, did not stop me from wishing you a nice day as well.

    Interesting that you noticed this.
That's because the media wants to counter the stereotype that only Black men are wanted & desirable in the interracial dating game.
