When Peter Dutton behaves and speaks as he does, I suppose the people in his department think it's acceptable to follow his example.
I don't know if anyone can rein him in.

I'm not sure why he's surprised, I received the same throwaway comment years ago from someone. I promptly told them that Australia has not paid one cent for my education and I have paid thousands of dollars in taxes. I'll go back when they give me all the money back I contributed to help support unemployed Australians

Peter Dutton is an ex QLD policeman. They have... different ideas about how people should be treated.

So was Bill Hayden. Dutton is an ********, regardless of his previous occupation. His department mirrors his attitude. Take a look at Pezzullo.

I'm sorry your wife cops that . Australians used to be more accepting, but now they believe is ok to be racist, discriminatory and bad mannered.

I tell her that. I can't believe what's happened here over the last twenty years or so, it has changed for the worse, sadly.

    Yes,
there is a strong shift towards the right, when did it start?
Must have been before the *I stop the boats guy*.
I think the shift started under Howard, not sure however how he did it.
Nationalism is the end of freedom and democracy, the end of treating others with respect and dignity.
We have seen it hundreds of times, in many countries.
    Cheers

My wife summed it up the other night. She said she was tired of being seen for what she is not, rather than what she is.

We used to be inclusive. That great story of SA's Governor http://www.governor.sa.gov.au who fled Vietnam with his family in a boat and arrived in Darwin harbour and the first Aussies he saw were a couple of blokes in a tinnie going out fishing. One of them welcomed the boat to Australia, hoisting up his beer (it was Darwin after all). Wouldn't happen now. It would be all black helicopters and Dutton's big mug everywhere scaring the kids and the horses.

I have always thought that it's hard to tell the difference between a Canadian accent and an American accent. The caller was from Canada and the male staffer at Peter Dutton’s office clearly mistook him as an American. The Americans can be mistreated like the Chinese in Australia or Britain by xenophobes because an American accent is out of place in these countries.

I support temporary camps in safe areas of the region they come from, with rehabilitation back unto their society once the war is over.

I don't want a single migrant let in until our welfare system is seriously reformed or abolished.

Why would you want the welfare system abolished? No age pension, no Medicare, no family benefit or rent assistance, etc?

None of it. The state should provide law and order services and not much else.

However, in the practical world we live in I'd probably compromise and replace the welfare state bureaucracy with a basic income such that there isn't such a disincentive to move out of welfare, and we can sack all the technocrats.

Yes it is rather unlikely that we'll replace the current welfare system with something far more efficient and less disincentivising, it's a real shame.

Social welfare provides a system for stable society. Most people aren't comfortable with welfare but importantly it provides stability in many ways across the board for all. Of course there are some bludgers, but they shouldn't used for stereotypical paint brushing, which I see as the issue.

Welfare is also a continuous fiscal stimulus that keeps many businesses open and many people employed. Social welfare is quite a smart provision and we need to protect it. Anarchy is simply BS and just an idea from those who who want something specific without consequence. We built this nation collectively and anyone who wants to live in a fantasy world of independence can always buy an acreage somewhere and survive off subsistence farming. Maybe we should allow people to do this, but restrict them from using our hospitals, emergency services, infrastructure....including roads, or even employment for that matter. Just pissssss their greedy and selfish backsides off to the bush and create their own societies.
