What's terribly stupid is not being able to follow why and how the US has always backed islamist movements in countries like Turkiye, been trying to "erode" their newly blooming "unique values"... You don't know what you're talking about because it was Ataturk's Turkiye that dropped Turkish bombs right on the heads of American units and their proxies in Syria and Iraq.

Face it - Kemal and his legacy were an aberration. Your country and people are reverting to everything they were before the father of your country came along. The "drift" towards Asia and Islamism is only natural.

Kemal was a great man, but there are some things that even he can't change, and one of them is nature.

As for NATO, I wish my own country would leave that alliance, so I can't blame the Turks for contemplating the same thing. NATO has always been for Europeans, and neither one of us are Europeans...

 

Turkey has never been the secular republic of U.S. myth/hopes/dreams (take your pick). I was stationed there (Sinop) in the 1960s. It was my impression that the cult of Ataturk was stronger than any allegiance to the Constitution or other democratic institutions. What does it tell you that he put the military in charge of protecting the Republic?
