That 78 million Americans still resist protective shots confounds anyone examining the medical evidence of the vaccines' effectiveness. But the evidence of history, turbocharged by the modern Republican Party's extremism, makes vaccine resistance no mystery -- and Biden's effort a slog even after nearly 800,000 deaths from Covid-19.

Just as they've elevated voting restrictions over the protection of democratic elections, Republican officials have elevated exploiting the pandemic over ending it. While GOP attorneys general bogged down vaccine mandates in court, GOP senators last week threatened to shutter the federal government to block them -- even as some Republicans slam Biden for failing to contain the pandemic.

They seek approval from rank-and-file Republicans, who represent the locus of vaccine refusal. Fully 60% of unvaccinated Americans, according to a recent Kaiser Family Foundation survey, identify with the GOP.

That proportion increased from 42% in April even as the pandemic killed Republicans in disproportionate numbers. A CNN analysis of data from Johns Hopkins University shows the risk of death from Covid-19 is 50% higher in states that former President Donald Trump won in 2020 than in states he lost.

    [...]

But those countries and others with advanced economies have still fully vaccinated higher shares of their populations than America's 60%. CNN data, for example, shows Germany at 68%, Austria at 66%, Australia at 73% and Canada at 76%.

After two years of the pandemic and 800,000 deaths, no more public money should be spent on convincing Conservatives who still refuse to be vaccinated.

On top of that, they publicly attack the people who are trying to save their lives.

Why pay for the recklessness of anti-science?

    Someone doesn’t like voter ID.

The left are the ones attacking those that want to save our lives by putting health care workers out of work.

someone thinks blacks, the least vaccinated, are conservatives.

You can't force people to want to live.

The Dems are letting unvaccinated illegals cross the border and then transporting them to multiple locations across the US. So either the Dem concern over Covid is false or the Dems are deliberately trying to kill people with Covid. Which is it in your opinion?

Since I received my two shots, I am not afraid of catching the virus from anyone.

The purpose of insurance is to protect us in the event that something (covered under that policy; car insurance, health insurance, mortgage insurance, etc.) happens. We can't pick and choose who *deserves* to get those benefits just because we don't like their choices or deem them "stupid."

Nobody gets out of life alive so this isn't a question of wanting to live or not wanting to live. And, it's not really fair to say that it's one or the other because vaccinated people can catch the virus and transmit it. The argument would be valid if being vaccinated ABSOLUTELY protected a person from either or both of those.

Ark, can we try to be a little more empathetic and understand that everyone has different life experiences that they use to assess life and what works best for them the same way you do and I do and, on this specific stance, their refusal is no more ridiculous than your acceptance of the vaccine (from their perspective).

That position seems to ignore reality. People are catching the Covid virus that have had two shots. Some with fatal results. The virus has already mutated to where current vaccinations are not effective against new strains. I had two shots as well but I am not going to get a Covid shot every 6 months. Particularly since I take Imuran to suppress my immune system. I have previously on PF forum posted links to valid scientific concerns concerning vaccinations and auto-immune diseases. Not going to do that again, but I encourage people to exercise critical thinking. At one time the left promoted questioning authority. Now they IMHO blindly follow authority.

COVID vaccines are over 93% effective after two doses.

COVID's vaccine reduces mortality by 98%.

Of the few who get the virus after two doses, only 6% have a condition that requires hospitalization.

And these data take into account all variants.

Hilarious that you would post such nonsense and use CNN as a source.

The GOP are the only group that has GROWN in proportion since Delta surge hit this summer.

Democrats are the only group that has shrunk since vaccines became available.

Don't you realize that you can still catch the virus and get sick? Chances are you won't die if you do but it could be a major inconvenience.

Thanks to you, I understand better how Trumpism works.

That is to say, repeating a falsehood over and over again, hoping to make it a truth.

It probably works for some, but not for me and others who have patiently explained to you that there may be more Republicans dying in the US but that they represent a proportionally larger share of a political whole.

It's never too late to take a math class.

I'm not saying that conservatives should be prevented from getting vaccinated, I'm saying that trying to convince them is pointless.

And so, the public funds used for this purpose is a monumental waste.

The pandemic has been going on for two years and has killed 800,000+ Americans.

Thousands of anti-vaxers who got sick and came close to dying have testified in favor of vaccination.

The vaccine reduces the chance of dying from the virus by 98%.

My position is that those who still refuse to be vaccinated will never do it.

    1) They are being transported to other holding sites, because the ones near the border have become full. That is not the same as letting them loose in the population. Nor is there much choice, in the matter; people can only be deported so quickly. If they were merely being turned around at the border, instead of being flown down to at least the remote, southern part of Mexico, thousands of miles from our border, they could simply turn around, & immediately return. So whatever idea you have for an alternative way, that this should be handled, I'm sure everyone would love to know; as I am also sure that it will be, completely, unrealistic.

    2) But one issue at a time, and this thread is about vaccine resistance. Your own thesis could only even theoretically hold water, if Covid were a real, and a deadly illness. If that is the case, what does your comment have to do with Republicans not getting vaccinated? Are you of the mentality, or saying that they are, that not getting the vaccine, and so increasing their own chances of serious health consequences, including death, is somehow a way to spite the Biden administration, I order to "show them," what they get, for needing to find more detention facilities, for illegal border-crossers? What is the connection? And why, if Covid is an actual threat, as your allegation clearly describes it to be, would Republicans not want to vaccinate against it?

I won’t be taking the vaccine because we have no long term safety data on the drug. Moreover I’ve already recovered from covid (which btw was like a slight cold with a heaviness in my chest and loss of taste and smell for a week) and after being tested 10 months later my doctor says I don’t need the vaccine as my antibody count is more numerous than almost all people who have been vaccinated and boosted. Probably has something to do with my absurdly high white blood cell count (which isn’t cancer we checked... I just have a baseline of ~17,000 wbc count whereas most people have 7,000)

Nevertheless I don’t want, nor do I need your vaccine bro

Nobody gets to tell me what to do with my body. These vaccines were rushed and are still new and I have every right to watch and observe how people's bodies react to it if they choose to get it. If I decide to get vaccinated it will be after multiple studies have come out showing the efficacy of it while providing minimum risk. That is my decision to make and if that angers anyone then that is their problem. I don't need to apologize for exercising my own personal rights as an adult.

I get it that some people have bought the anti-vax talking points and think the vaccine is dangerous, so if they don't want to take it, then so be it. What I dont get is all the time and energy they invest in trying to persuade others from not taking it.

Sure, there is probably someone like that.

Not wanting the vaccine is one thing, but trump supporters position on why they dont may be reasonable with some, but the amount of misinfo is not equivalent.
