Right, just about to leave for my first jab.
My only concern is the fact that the vaccination centre is only two or three miles from Sizewell Nuclear Reactor.
Oh well, the chances of either the vaccine or a radiation leak harming me are far smaller than the risk of getting Covid 19.
It's like raising while holding a royal flush.

You could also be attacked by a flying shark.

Oh god, I hadn't accounted for that. It is on the coast as well.
Too late now though, just had the AZ jab and am waiting for the fifteen minutes before they let me drive.

Beware of the flying sharks on your way back. Statistically, they are much more likely to attack you than the vaccine causing a bad reaction.

My grandfather served in the RAF 212 ''Shark'' squadron in North Africa during WWII. Flying sharks were a real concern for Rommel's Afrika corps.

By the way, I'm sure I saw Bill Gates laughing manically in a back room at the vaccination centre. Is there any particular brand of tin foil that is best for hat making?

Does it come in candy apple red?

Some folks make it sound like they're bragging about their new bike or something... this is a very strange trend.

Well, it's like getting a new bike only much, much safer.

You saw a Bill Gates clone. He has cloned himself into millions of copies, so that he sends one to each vaccination center, to make sure the microchips are getting into each vial.
As for the tinfoil, get a heavy duty one. It's more guaranteed. Here:

So you think it's a strange trend that folks are happy that they are getting a very efficacious and very safe vaccine that will allow them (and their countries) to defeat this scourge and bring back reasonably normal life, jump-start the economy, and avoid the possibility of getting killed or maimed for life by this nasty virus? I mean, according to the new CDC recommendations, grandparents will be able to hug their grandchildren again, friends will be able to gather again for indoor dinner parties... yep, pretty exciting stuff.

I'd say, it's pretty reasonable that people are excitedly celebrating it in a thread.

Anti-vaxxers must get very frustrated when they see people's happiness, and realize that people are not dropping dead by the millions from the vaccines and are not turning into alligators.

I understand your frustration with this thread.

I think its strange that people are specifying the 'brand', like 'I got a new Toyota Tundra' or 'check out this Ford Raptor.' Its certainly not strange for people to celebrate the wonders of modern medicine. But this is the first time I've even seen folks 'branding' medicine in their celebration.

I'm halfway expecting 'my Moderna kicks your Phizer's ass' bumper stickers to start popping up...

I guess the branding is just in function of the fact that this is the vaccine that the OP got.

Also, the brands do perform somewhat differently.

As of now, the vaccine that seems to be the highest performing is the Pfizer so I don't get surprised that someone might get excited about this being the one he/she got.

    Moderna is pretty good too.

Johnson and Johnson is good against hospitalizations and deaths but less good in preventing mild and moderate cases. Still not a reason not to accept it, including because their results were done mostly when variants were already with us so it did have some efficacy drop, which still doesn't affect the main thing: it does prevent hospitalizations and deaths.

The jury on the AstraZeneca is still out, at least in America. It's not for nothing that we haven't approved it yet. As a matter of fact I think we should not approve it, for various reasons that I've detailed elsewhere, unless the American phase 3 trial which is expected in April, is rather sound and devoid of the many mistakes they made in previous trials.

Interestingly enough, the Sputinik V does appear to be good; at least, if we can trust the information in their phase 3 report that was favorably peer-reviewed and published in the Lancet. I was definitely not impressed by their Phase 1 and Phase 2 papers but the phase 3 paper, if the info their is not fake, is impressive.

The CoronaVac has been very controversial with wildly diverging data in Chinese, Brazilian, Turkish, and Indonesian trials.

The Novavax has a bit of a mixed picture too although I do believe that the latest trial was convincing and favorable.

So, for now, to keep your car analogy going, the Pfizer seems to be the Cadillac (or the Ferrari) of the vaccines. The AstraZeneca seems to be the beat-up old Volkswagen Beetle.

So I find it normal that someone says "yay, I got the Pfizer!"

I was hoping for the Pfizer vaccine but since studies in Brazil and at Oxford University seem to show that it is effective against the P1 strain I'm not too disappointed to get the Astra-zenica jab.
No side effects after four and a half hours and I've not miscarried or had a stroke yet.
Also, I'm a big fan of beaten up VW Beetles. Very reliable and cheap to run.

    LOL
(typos - I meant beaten up, and at some point there I meant "there" not "their", a mistake I hate when other people make it, LOL).
Yes, they did have a paper showing efficacy against the P.1 but not so much against the B.1.351 so I guess it depends on the variant mix your community gets. They are all good against the B.1.1.7 which is the dominant one where you are, right?

And erm, yep, beaten-up VW Beetles do seem to be a tiny bit cheaper than a Ferrari.

Now, seriously, it seems like the AstraZeneca shot is indeed one of the cheapest, like $3 when the Moderna is $37.

What gets me shouting at the telly is when people say less when they mean fewer.
When I get called a pedant for doing it I always point out that a pedant is just someone who is always right and thank them for the compliment.
If they then tell me that I'm being patronising I say ''how clever of you to notice dear''.

LOL, I love it! You're an interesting individual, Montegriffo. I wouldn't mind being real life friends with you if our paths ever crossed and you felt likewise.

It's just Monte to my friends.
If you ever want to see the real France, outside of Paris, mon chateau est votre chateau.
Same if you ever come to God's own country here in Albion.

Talking about being pedantic, Monte, if we're friends, then it should be Mon château est ton château, not votre. Ha!

But friends employ "tutoyer" in French, not "vouvoyer" regardless of people being blood relatives or not.
I hate to be always right.

Well, friends was the presumption I didn't want to make.
Us reserved Englishmen hate to be over-familiar and more to the point, I have the French language skills of a backwards four year old.

OK I see you don't want to be my friend!!! :(
I'm devastated. I think I'll just commit suicide.
    Farewell, cruel world.

Not what I meant. Just didn't want to be presumptive.
To show you my willingness I'll write a poetic eulogy about how much I miss you and telegram it to your funeral to be read by a weeping loved one.
I'll start working on a humorous limerick to finish on to lighten the mood.

    To my acquaintance professor Centrefield
though our friendship wasn't officially sealed
    I have to admit
    I admired his great wit
and to his superiority in French I must yield
