Gov. Andrew Cuomo: 'We’re not going to make America great again; it was never that great'

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo on Wednesday ratcheted up his verbal feud with President Donald Trump saying “we're not going to make America great again, it was never that great.”

The comment, seemingly meant as a dig at the president's "Make America Great Again" slogan, drew laughter and gasps from the crowd on Wednesday and swift backlash on social media.

Cuomo at the event, which included a bill signing for an anti-human trafficking measure, went on to say that America “...will reach greatness when discrimination and stereotyping against women, 51 percent of our population, is gone. And every woman's full potential is realized and unleashed and every woman is making her full contribution."

In a statement sent several hours after Cuomo's comments, his press secretary Dani Lever sought to clarify the governor's comments.

“Governor Cuomo disagrees with the President,” Lever said in a statement sent to ABC News. “The Governor believes America is great and that her full greatness will be fully realized when every man, woman, and child has full equality. America has not yet reached its maximum potential."

Video is available at the link. He dissects the slogan "make America great again" and makes a good point! America has an ugly past in many ways, and Trump is doing nothing to move us forward. In fact, with his constant pandering to extremists on the right, he places us at risk of going back on things like environmental protection, women's rights and minority rights.

Dirty Donald was born AFTER WW2 and was a child when America was a great country in the 1950's and 60's.We haven't won a war since WW2 unless you count our invasion of Grenada,Korea a stalemate,Viet Nam a loss,Iraq &Afghanistan still dragging on after an eternity.We led the world in technical achievement in the 50's 60's and 70's but now we are falling behind.Our infrastructure is largely from Eisenhower in the 1950's and we are having trouble keeping it up let alone ever improving it and bringing into the 21st century.Much of our technical achievement was driven by IMMIGRANTS.

 

I don't know why he would take that back. He didn't get his job by loving America.

I just wish him and his ilk would just once be willing to stand by a principle. Just once...

By the way, pointing out a few flaws the US has/had doesn’t help you. Not one single person has ever tried to make the claim that America was perfect. Not one. So suck it up.

LEGAL immigrants, with high IQs and college degrees. The average Mexican sneaking across the border is ILLEGAL and is contributing nothing to this country other than a cheap source of labor for companies. Meanwhile college educated immigrants from other parts of the world who played by the rules and got work visas eventually go home even if they don't want to. I use to work at a company that had workers form Poland on 4 month visas. They were young, hungry (many of them worked 3 or more weeks in a row straight without any days off) and more importantly they were college educated or at least attending college.

How the **** is it fair to them that they have to go home but some uneducated illegal from Mexico gets to stay? If you want more immigrants than you expand the work visas you don't just let anyone nilly willy walk over and stay.

 

Yet Dems never said that when Bill Clinton used the exact same slogan for his 1992 presidential run.

He's been a horrible governor. In 2010 when he was running for governor, he came out with this video in which he said, " “I’m Andrew Cuomo, and I work for you. Together, we can make New York great again. Let’s get to work.” What an idiot he is...

You would have applauded it had Obama or any other Democrat said it, or if it had been said during the Bush/Cheney Administration, as it has been the express, constantly repeated, LW stance on U.S. foreign policy for FIFTY YEARS.
