On Wednesday, the government said it would ban the construction of new oil-refining, steel, cement and thermal power plants starting from March, state-run newspaper China Daily said.

On Thursday, levels of PM2.5 particulates, which are the most hazardous to health, rose to 568 micrograms per cubic metre. according to the US embassy.

The WHO recommends a maximum of 25 micrograms per cubic metre.

    'Smoking bacon'

A yellow pollution alert, the third highest in the four-tier system, has been in place since Saturday, according to the Beijing Meteorological Bureau.

Less severe pollution is also expected in Tianjin, ****i province and parts of Shanxi and Sichuan provinces.

A government official in the south-western city of Dazhou in Sichuan Province said earlier in January that the lingering smog was caused by smoking bacon, State-run Xinhua news agency said.

Rao Bing, deputy head of Dazhou's Environment Protection Bureau, was referring to the traditional method of preserving pork and sausages common in Sichuan.

On Sina Weibo, China's micro-blogging site, many mocked the argument saying "smoking bacon has a long history, but smog does not", Xinhua reported.

During previous bouts of heavy smog Chinese government officials have given other controversial explanations for smog including blaming farmers burning straw, another traditional practice.

China is on its 6th day of a yellow smog alert (one down from worst smog alert). Face mask and anti-pollution device shops can't keep up with demand. This is what a no-EPA policy looks like (see video). Last night Marco Rubio said one the first things that he would do as president is do away with the EPA.

When I remember rivers on fire in the 70's, and LA engulfed in smog; and see videos of China's smog problem; and when I hear Republicans threatening to dismantle the EPA, my center-right ideology moves closer to the center, if not to the left.

In many instances, the EPA has instituted ridiculous standards that no business could thrive in, but there cannot be a total dismantling of the program or we will devolve back into burning rivers, and a Chinese-style smog with everyone having to live in face masks.

Marco Rubio is wrong for advocating the dismissal of the EPA.

The EPA is out of control. Having said that, Trump won't dismantle the organization. There is good that comes out of it so long as their work isn't conducted along ideological lines.

I guess all that Left wing talk about how China was leading the world in renewable energies was once again "A Lie"! Time is a Liberals #1 enemy, it always waits patiently until they contradict themselves and then someone jumps up and say "YOU LIE"

A few years ago our son spent two weeks in China. He said the smog was unbearable. When he returned, we threw away all the clothes he took to China because no matter how many times we washed them, the funky industrial smell would not come out.
