The white house wanted the press to wait to leak the story out of political reasons. When they published the story anyway, the Justice Department got a warrant for all the phone records of the entire news company, presumably trying to figure out how the story leaked and who was responsible. Maybe an intimidation tactic, or maybe there was some plan to exact retribution.
